Private Lesson, Group Class and Ensemble Descriptions

Beginning students will have both a private lesson and a group class each week.  As students progress, they are eligible to add an ensemble.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are held on a weekly basis with a Suzuki Royal Oak instructor. Lessons can be either 30, 45 or 60 minutes in length. Lessons are taught either at the school or in the instructor’s home. Private lessons are scheduled by the instructor.

Group Class – Either Group Class, Junior Camerata or Camerata are required for all students taking private lessons.

All students receiving private lessons with a Suzuki Royal Oak instructor receive a 45 minute group class held on a weekly basis. Group classes are formed based on instrument and piece level. The focus for all group classes is review of the Suzuki repertoire at the appropriate level for each student. Students in Books 4 and above will be placed in either Junior Camerata or Camerata.

Junior Camerata

This group meets on a weekly basis and is comprised of Cello students in Books 3 - 4 and Viola / Violin students in Books 4 and 5 of the Suzuki repertoire. Students focus on performing their Suzuki repertoire as well as learning pieces outside of the Suzuki repertoire. Students are grouped by instrument for this class. Junior Camerata students have the opportunity to go on tour every other year as well as perform at conferences and other performance venues throughout the area.

Camerata

This group meets on a weekly basis and is comprised of Cello students in Books 5 and above, Viola and Violin students in Books 6 and above of the Suzuki repertoire. Students focus on performing their Suzuki repertoire as well as learning pieces outside of the Suzuki repertoire. Students are grouped by instrument for this class. Violinists may be divided by level depending on number of students enrolled. High School students can opt to play in the Camerata Ensemble only to meet their group class requirement. Camerata students have the opportunity to go on tour every other year as well as perform at conferences and other performance venues throughout the area.

Ensembles (may be selected in addition to Group Class, Junior Camerata and Camerata):

Group Class Plus

This ensemble is for students in late Book 1 through Book 3. The class meets on a weekly basis. Students learn note reading and music theory skills as well as introductory ensemble playing through reading music. Students will have their regular group class at either 5:30 PM or 7:30 PM.

Suzuki Strings or Symphonietta

Junior Camerata (and younger Camerata) students have the option of signing up for either Suzuki Strings or Symphonietta. Students will be placed in the appropriate ensemble based on their private teachers’ recommendation.

Suzuki Strings is made up of predominately elementary aged students. This ensemble will focus on advanced note reading and music theory skills carried over from their Group Class Plus experience. Suzuki Strings will also work on string orchestra repertoire with two performances during the year.

Symphonietta is made up of predominately middle school aged students. This ensemble will focus on advanced note reading and music theory skills carried over from their Suzuki Strings experience. Symphonietta will also focus on String Orchestra repertoire with at least three performances throughout the year.

Camerata Ensemble

Camerata Ensemble is made up of predominately high school aged students. Students audition for this ensemble in May and June. Audition requirements are two 3-octave Major scales and two 3-octave melodic minor scales of the student’s choice and a piece of the student’s choice. This class is devoted to learning chamber music repertoire both in small ensembles individually coached, and a larger String Orchestra. This ensemble meets for 90 minutes.
