Subject: [Cycling] Miles For Hope says Thank You - Pics posted!

Bob and I wanted to send a Thank You out to all Suncoast members who attended Miles For Hope on 9/20/08. Bob and I were very touched by the attendance our event had. We hope everyone had a good time! We are excited to say that we ended up with a total of 205 registered riders! We are still working on tallying the amounts raised, we will post that on the web page as soon as we have it. www.MilesForHope.org Join us for our 2nd Annual planned for September 27, 2009!

If anyone (who has not already put their name on the list at the event) would like to order an event Jersey. Please contact me as soon as possible. I can take orders through Monday, then I must place the order for the additional jerseys. They run small in size, so it might be best to contact me to discuss sizing. Christine has put a picture of the jersey in the last newsletter (not sure I can attach here).

I also wanted to let everyone know that we have uploaded event day photos for those who may be interested. Prints start as low as $4.00. Since our photographers donated their time, we are able to keep our prices reasonable, therefore increasing the amount we can donate per picture. All proceeds from the sale of the pictures will be donated to Brain Tumor Research. There is also an option to order the event pictures with or without the event logo and date printed on the picture at no additional charge. http://www.milesforhope.org/Photo.html

Thanks!

Benefit Dinner for The Joshua Kuck Memorial Scholarship

posted ‎‎Sep 19, 2008 5:06 AM‎‎ by Randy Sprigg

The inaugural Benefit Dinner for The Joshua Kuck Memorial Scholarship is being hosted by USA Cycling Development Foundation, The Columbia Restaurant and The Family and Friends of Josh Kuck.

On October 21st 2007, while riding The Hilly Hundred in Dade City with his USF cycling team, Josh Kuck was struck by a vehicle and taken from family and friends. His life ended long before he was allowed to achieve all of which he was capable.

His family and team honor his memory with this scholarship and support the efforts of those working to keep tragedies like this from taking anymore of our fellow cyclists.

Join us for an evening of good memories and camaraderie as we launch the new Kuck Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Kuck Fund will award annual scholarships to Collegiate Cyclists who do exceptional work in the area of cycling safety and advocacy.

When: October 19, 2008 7 pm
Where: The Columbia Restaurant Ybor City
2117 East 7th Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33605

$75 a plate - corporate table prices available

Miles for Hope - Fox News Story

posted ‎‎Sep 16, 2008 6:20 AM‎‎ by Randy Sprigg

Since this is a new event I wanted to add some background and a Fox News story about this event. Bob is a member of the Suncoast Cycling Club and I understand there are a couple of club members who have also been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Each year more than 200,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor. Primary brain tumors comprise approximately 40,000 of these diagnoses.

Here is a local Fox News Story about Bob and this event.

Hope to see you on the ride!

Subject: postie OUR NEW FUNDRAISER -- THE MDA CHALLENGE LAUNCHES -

Hi everyone –

I just wanted to announce that our club’s new fundraiser ride, the MDA CHALLENGE site has officially launched, including active.com registration and donation page.

Please visit the site and learn all about the event – and take advantage of getting started early with your optional fundraising as there are some great incentives this year, including THREE Bikes (one is a carbon MASI) -- a cool, limited edition jersey and a raffle opportunity for a Trek Madone.  You can also download and print a brochure with mail-in registration from the registration page. (and if you see any errors, please email me.)

If you participated in the past Diabetes Challenge rides, you’ll be receiving an official email announcement so forgive the duplication.  J

BTW, we are still recruiting volunteers (and sponsorships) – keep in mind that many we don’t need until “day of” or just prior, for greeting, set up, parking, road marking duties, etc.

If you and/or your family members are so inclined, please contact MDA or one of the contact emails listed the site.

THANKS and see you on the road!

Christine

Diabetes Challenge ride replacement named

posted ‎‎Aug 15, 2008 1:35 PM‎‎ by Randy Sprigg   [ updated ‎‎Aug 15, 2008 1:36 PM‎‎ ]

Many of you knew (and many of you didn’t know) that Suncoast Cycling’s 11 years of putting on the Diabetes Challenge for the benefit of ADA (American Diabetes Association) officially ended with last year’s event.  There were many factors to effect the change but you can be assured it was a friendly parting.

As members, you have always played a great part in the success of our annual fundraising event, either by participating, fundraising, volunteering or all of above.  One thing we are keenly aware of is that OUR CLUB MEMBERS CONTINUE TO SHOW HOW SPECIAL THEY ARE!  So, we are counting on you to continue with your valuable support of our club and now of … “drum roll”……

OUR NEW EVENT – MDA CHALLENGE – IS NOW OFFICIAL!

The event will take place on Sunday, November 16th.  Please mark your calendars NOW and plan to participate. The same great routes and venue will be offered, plus some great fundraising incentives as in the past. And YES, there will again be an exciting limited edition jersey available for your fundraising efforts!

MDA IS A GREAT CAUSE!

Please visit their site to learn more about this disease and their associated cause for ALS. (mda.org)  One of our club member’s daughters will be our “Ambassador”, so watch for her inspiring story to motivate you to get involved.  Then get ready to “Ride for the Kids” and for MDA!

WE DO NEED VOLUNTEERS!

We are playing catch up a bit and are still open for sponsorships, volunteers, committee help and more. If you are interested in getting involved, let me know and I’ll add you to the email list, plus let you know when the next meeting is, and what types of assistance we need.  Some needs are “pre event” and some are basically “day of”.  We hope you’ll support us by volunteering to be part of making our club “event” continue to be a great success, as it has been in the past.

WATCH FOR OUR WEBSITE LAUNCH…

MDAChallenge.com will launch soon with lots more details, our Youth Ambassador story, online registration, fundraising info, downloadable forms and LOTS MORE!   PLEASE SHARE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WITH ALL YOUR CYCLING FRIENDS THAT MAY BE IN OTHER CLUBS!

Thanks for your time!  Hope to hear from you.

UPPER TAMPA BAY TRAIL TO THE SUNCOAST TRAIL CONNECTION UPDATE

posted ‎‎Aug 14, 2008 2:40 PM‎‎ by Randy Sprigg

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners voted on last week to spend 3 million dollars on part of Phase IV, the connection of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail to the Suncoast Trail. We won a small but important battle, but even more we won the war for the future. No we did not get all the money to connect the trail, but we started the connection, and enlightened a lot of people of the importance of trails and the quality of life they bring to people.

THANK YOU to all who wrote, called, emailed, etc. Your actions changed the minds of several key people and this is just the beginning! To read the article that appeared in the St. Pete Times.

UTBT Extension Update

posted ‎‎Aug 8, 2008 6:35 AM‎‎ by Randy Sprigg

Your e-mail to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) regarding funding for the extension of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail and connection to the Suncoast Trail was referred to our department for review and response.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2008, the BOCC approved Section C-1 of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail Phase IV (the segment along Lutz-Lake Fern Road) that will also include a replacement trailhead for the Suncoast temporary trailhead which is being eliminated due to work on Veterans Expressway. The remainder of the extension was not funded, however, we are still in the acquisition phase for the trail right of way. The project will be recommended for funding in future years as funding is available. We will also be working with the Florida Department of Transportation to apply for possible reimbursement grants for up to $7 million of the expected $11 million cost.

Thank you your continued support of our Greenways System.

Sincerely,

Mark Thornton, Director
