Nausea, Cramps, and Diarrhea
I don't know if you're still collecting these stories, but as I sit here
still recovering from a painful bout of nausea and diarrhea several hours after
eating Planter's cocoa-covered almonds (not chocolate-covered -- I wish I had
the exact name, but I removed the almonds from the original container), I too
really, really wish the FDA required food manufacturers to put a sucralose
warning on all foods containing it.
Until a couple of weeks ago, I had not had diarrhea in over 10 years. Two
weeks ago, I had diarrhea twice in three days. Looking back after the second
bout, I realized that before each bout I had eaten 3-5 of these cocoa-covered
almonds. I grabbed the container and read the ingredients -- all sounded OK
except "sucralose." I figured that must be the culprit, as I don't knowingly
use any artificial sweetener, and I determined to stay away from these
almonds.
But this afternoon I had a chocolate craving, and, having no chocolate in
the house, ignored my better judgment and ate about 5-6 of these almonds.
Within 2-3 hours, I was suffering again terribly -- nausea, painful cramps, and
diarrhea. After several more hours I finally feel OK enough to sit at the
computer and compose this email. Just from this Web site I know I am not
alone. Why doesn't the FDA require a warning label -- or at least a
notification -- that "This product contains sucralose"???
I don't have any particular digestive problems -- so if the sucralose
(which wasn't in a "diet" product) affected me like this, I can only imagine
there are a lot of folks out there who need to know of its potential
gastrointestinal side effects.
