What is SEED?

Special Education Enrichment and Development Foundation

SEED is a newly formed nonprofit organization run by volunteers to benefit students with special needs in the Lafayette School District. SEED is currently considering strategies to support a wide range of proposals that could support and enrich the education of special needs students in the Lafayette School District. SEED intends to raise funds predominantly through applications for grants from private foundations and public entities that provide grants. SEED will also sponsor community-based fund raising events to help build a support community for our parents with special needs children.

Please consider volunteering your time. We have positions both large and small- and it's all important work! To learn more, contact us at

Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Processing Disorder

www.out-of-sync-child.com

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), is not a new problem. It is a new definition of an old problem. SPD can cause a bewildering variety of symptoms. When their central nervous systems are ineffective in processing sensory information, children have a hard time functioning in daily life. They may look fine and have superior intelligence, but may be awkward and clumsy, fearful and withdrawn, or hostile and aggressive. SPD can affect not only how they move and learn, but also how they behave, how they play and make friends, and especially how they feel about themselves.

The Lafayette Library has books available on Sensory Processing Disorder.  Check out our recommended books under "Tools" for a list of books on this subject.  We have recommended Occupational Therapists trained to help children with sensory integration listed on our website as well.

The Sensory Show with Kelly Arnone

www.thesensoryshow.com

The Sensory Show is a fun and informative show hosted by Kelli Arnone, an occupational therapist who specializes in sensory processing disorders. She owns and runs Pediatric Potentials, Inc, with her husband Brian Arnone in Orlando, Florida. Together they have a passion for informing anyone who will listen, about the in’s and out’s of sensory processing disorders and how these children can get better!

Kelli’s mission is to educate you on sensory terminology in a down-to-earth way and provide you with many topics of interest related to raising or teaching a child with sensory processing challenges. She provides helpful tips and lists of activities to try at home and school, to help children reach their highest potential.  Check out her free podcasts.

The Hanen Center

The Hanen Centre provides the important people in a child's life with the knowledge and training they need to help the child develop the best possible language, social and literacy skills.  The Lafayette School District's Early Intervention program uses Hanen methods  such as "It Takes Two to Talk" and "More than Words" with their children.
