What is SEED?

Special Education Enrichment and Development Foundation

SEED is a newly formed nonprofit organization run by volunteers to benefit students with special needs in the Lafayette School District. SEED is currently considering strategies to support a wide range of proposals that could support and enrich the education of special needs students in the Lafayette School District. SEED intends to raise funds predominantly through applications for grants from private foundations and public entities that provide grants. SEED will also sponsor community-based fund raising events to help build a support community for our parents with special needs children.

Please consider volunteering your time. We have positions both large and small- and it's all important work! To learn more, contact us at

Early Intervention Info

Early Intervention Screening for Preschoolers

Attention parents of 3-4 year olds residing in the Lafayette School District Area: Does your child have speech or language delays, motor delays or social/emotional immaturities? Preschoolers may be screened for placement in the District's  Early Intervention Program. If you reside in the Lafayette School District and your child displays difficulties in any of these developmental areas that you feel could impact future educational performance, please contact Sharon Carman, Department of Student Services, Lafayette School District at (925) 927-3516 or scarman@lafsd.k12.ca.us

Early Intervention in the Lafayette School District

For parents whose children receive early intervention services through the Lafayette school district, the Penguins Preschool Early Intervention district program is located at the Burton Valley Elementary school campus.  After your child 'graduates' or ages out of the Penguins EI program, they may begin kindergarten either at their home school campus, in the district kindergarten program located at the Springhill Elementary campus or in the Special Day Class (SDC) at Springhill Elementary, depending on your child's needs and IEP.  Regardless, when it is time to register for kindergarten, please be sure to register your child at their home school location until your IEP team meets and a determination is made as far as where your child will attend kindergarten.

While your child is in the Penguins program at Burton Valley Elementary, we recommend that you subscribe to the Burton Valley Broadcast, a weekly school e-newsletter, to keep up on happenings at the Burton Valley Campus. Please contact Stacy Bauer, Subscription Manager at broadcastsubscription@gmail.com
