Welcome

Is this you?

  • Looking for a line-oriented ISPF clone because Windows character-mode text editors just don't do it for you?
  • Been a loyal Tritus SPF user and feel 'left behind' now that it's gone?
  • Miss ISPF features like Exclude, Overlay, Bounds, Sort, Hex mode, etc.?
  • Like to tweak and customize your edit environment?
  • Want support for special file formats, like EBCDIC, RECFM=V or RECFM=F, and Unicode?
  • A Hercules mainframe emulator user who wants to SUBMIT jobs and have a reasonable SYSOUT browser?
  • Want power-user features other editors don't have?  Even ISPF?
Well, maybe you've found the solution - SPFLite.

It won't be everything ISPF/PDF was, (it is called Lite!) but it will surprise you with its flexibility, ability to be customized and additional commands and editing concepts to enhance your ability to 'get the job done'.  SPFLite has been continually developed and enhanced far beyond its humble beginnings.  It's no "Lite" weight any more!

And it's about time the web site acknowledges the immense contribution to the 5.0 and 6.0 releases of Robert Hodge.  The vast majority of the new SPFLite 'bells and whistles' are from his imaginative mind.  He gets to dream up some truly wonderful concepts and I get the hard work of turning them into reality.   But I get even - he gets to do lots of testing and (ugh) documentation.   Somehow between us I think we've managed to produce a pretty amazing editor.

(Thanks, George.  Over the last couple of years I have gone from a semi-interested occasional user to being integrally involved assisting George in his day-to-day development activities for SPFLite.  I'm very grateful he has allowed me to have such an influence on his work.  I was a long-time ISPF user on mainframes, heavily involved in Tritus SPF, and to say I "love" SPF editors would be an understatement.  So in every sense of the word, SPFLite has been a labor of love (that's "labour", Geoge), and we hope that it shows in this release.  But don't let him fool you.  SPFLite 5.0 and now 6.0 have the best documentation it's ever had - which is a good thing, considering how much has been added.  George and I face the usual struggles of two people passionate about making a great technology live up to its potential.  Rest assured, it really was developed after the design and documentation.  I don't mind a bit doing that part - no 'ugh' at all.  I also have insidious ways of finding bugs that make George wince - and makes this a better product in the process.  And about the name "Lite" ... SPFLite 6.0's feature set is - in all the ways that really matter - more than competitive with any SPF-style editor ever available on a PC. We had used the number 5.1 during development, and for a time on this web site, but it really deserves to be given a full version upgrade rather than a "point release" because of the number of major new features included.   I was really tempted to call this version "SPF Heavy", but it's George's program and he picked the name first - so he gets his way  --  RH)

Please try it out and let us know what you think.  Regardless of whether you end up using it, or whether you register or not, we welcome all your comments, good and bad.

Last Update: March  1 / 2012

News:      Version 5.0.1270  is still the current stable release.  (Go directly to the Download Page)

But version 6.0 is imminent and updating the web site is going to be staged a bit at a time, culminating with the posting of the 6.0 executables.  Why?  Well we use Google Sites for hosting, and there is just no simple way to accomplish a mass update at one time.

So as the site slowly changes, treat the information about the new 6.0 release as teasers and hints about what's to come.   If you are not on our mailing list (or you're just not sure), drop us a note at spflite@gmail.com and we'll add your name to the list to ensure you receive the 6.0 announcement letter when it is released.

Looking for some details?  Check out the Change Log for some specifics of what 6.0 contains.
