  •  Elder Issues & Baby Boomers

  • Speech-Language Pathologists work with clients of all ages, but it's the expected needs of aging Americans that should fuel steady growth in this profession through 2014 & beyond, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • Of the many types of healthcare practitioners who care for the elderly, speech-language pathologists (SLPs / Speech Therapists) may have the greatest potential to actually improve the quality of life for older Americans. SLPs, who evaluate and treat speech, language, cognitive & swallowing disorders can help restore a person's fundamental quality of life in their community & also help in end of life care as an expert in swallowing disorders in home health-care, nursing facilities and hospices around the country.

  • Many age-related conditions, like Alzheimer's disease, strokes and hearing loss, are expected to become more prevalent as the country's population ages. Indeed, the government projects the number of people 65 and older will nearly double between 2005 and 2030, to 71.5 million. The speech-language pathology profession is taking steps to prepare for this great gray wave.

  • The elderly population increased elevenfold between 1900 and 1994; the nonelderly increased only threefold.

  • Of all the States, Florida had by far the highest proportion elderly, almost 19 percent. Other States with high proportions elderly (14 to 16 percent), ranked in descending order, were Pennsylvania, Iowa, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Connecticut, Kansas, and Massachusetts

  • In 2008, 3 of 4 elderly deaths were due to heart disease, cancer, or stroke.
  • In this century the rate of growth of the elderly population (persons 65 years old and over) has greatly exceeded the growth rate of the population of the country as a whole. The elderly increased by a factor of 11, from 3 million in 1900 to 33 million in 1994. In comparison, the total population, as well as the population under 65 years old, tripled. Under the Census Bureau's middle series projections, the number of persons 65 years old and over would more than double by the middle of the next century to 80 million. About 1 in 8 Americans were elderly in 1994, but about 1 in 5 would be elderly by the year 2030.
  • In 2006, the oldest of thebaby boomers, the generation born between 1946 and 1964, will turn 60 years old. Among the Americans celebrating their 60th will be our two most recent presidents, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Other well-known celebrities reaching this milestone include Cher, Donald Trump, Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton. To commemorate this occasion, the Census Bureau has compiled a collection of facts relating to, perhaps, our most celebrated generation.  Here are a few statistics:
  • Close to 8000 people are turning 60 each day in 2008, according to projections. That amounts to 330 every hour.

    •         50.8%
  • Percentage of women baby boomers in 2005.

  • $2,695
Average annual expenditures on health care in 2004 for people ages 45 to 54 — the age group that is the heart of the baby boom generation. When budgeting medical expenses, baby boomers should expect increased health-care spending as they age; for instance, those age 55 to 64 spent $3,262 and those 65 and over, $3,899.

  • The UnitedStates experienced an explosion of births after American soldiers returned home from World War II. Sociologists define those born between 1946 and 1964, or those who are currently 40-58 years of age, as "Baby Boomers."
  • During the Baby Boomer years, approximately 76 million Americans were born. Today, this represents 28 percent of the American population.

When You Can't Find the Words, When You Have Difficulty Swallowing, Turn to a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Words - More Than Just Talk

  • Words are the building blocks of communication. They express our emotions and help communicate our needs. But some people can't use the words - they have a communication disorder. Disorders can affect their ability to speak or prevent them from understanding. Impaired swallowing resulting from disease or damage to the cranial nerves or brain stem can be defined as dysphagia. It can affect any age group, but most often presents among the elderly. As many as 40% of nursing home residents across the United States suffer from some degree of swallowing disability.

  • Thanks to the Medical Speech-Language Pathologist's knowledge of swallowing anatomy, manuevers, strategies and exercises these individuals are now receiving specialized therapy that is covered by Medicare and private insurance. Speech-Language Pathologists use computer technology, language, oral motor exercises and other techniques to help individuals with their neurological deficits.

    • Certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologists practice independently and in institutions like rehabilitation centers, hospitals, schools and universities. Most are certified members of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association and are licensed in one or more states.
