The SpartaNZ have taken out the biggest tournament in New Zealand again!
The first game against Blenheim ended up being the toughest. With great wing shots from Rob Sarich,
brilliant nine-metre shooting from Collin Crabbe, and a great fast break combination from Pat Whatman and Ahmed Al Abbas the SpartaNZ were up most of the game. Unfortunately, great team play from the Blenheim lads edged them ahead in the last five minutes.
The SpartaNZ managed to dig themselfs out of this hole and were even one goal up in the last minute. Then, in the dying seconds Ryan Roselli scored a brillant goal tying the game 16 - 16.
From there, good wins against Massey University (Palmerston North) and Auckland led to a final match against the Vikings of Wellington. SpartaNZ pulled off the win, and with it, the tournament.
Thanks very much to the crew that organised the tournament, and we'll be back next year to go for the three-peat!
The first ever Taupo tournament was held in march 2010. This was due to the hard work of several SpartaNZ especially Rob Saritch. Due to this being a SpartaNZ tournament the team wanted to stake out which was rightfully theres, to take the trophy home. The pool matches were no trouble for the team easily beating Vic uni, the vikings and waikato to go through to the final. The final ended up being against Vic uni. The first half vic uni came out firing on all cylinders. Both teams were tit for tat the half time result ending in a draw. Regrouping the SpartaNZ lifted there game. They used there strengths, and they used them well. The Ahmed and Pat combination was flowing. The nine meter shots from Colin and Pablo started going in regularly and they game ended up being a white wash. Not helped by the several injurys vic men were hampered with. The SpartaNZ Achieved there goal. This looks to be a very good year lets hope the SpartaNZ winning streak continues! |
