I offer a variety of enrichment classes for children ages 4 and up in history, science, math, language, and the arts.  Class ages are a guideline.  Contact me directly if you think your child would do well in a class outside of his or her age range.  Below are my current offerings for Fall 2011.

 A parent/child class in which each week we'll explore a different letter through songs, stories, movement, and art.  Appropriate for children of any age who are getting to know their letters and letter sounds.  We'll start with A and go to Z.

History
Early Modern History: Part One (1600-1720)
Ages 8-10

Tuesdays:  September 20th to December 29th, no class Oct. 11th and Dec. 6th (12 classes)

Location: Discovery Learning Center, 411 Roxas St., Santa Cruz

In this class for younger history students we will study early modern era world history using The Story of the World Volume 3 as our guide.  Students will need to provide their own copy of the book or the audio CDs.  Each week students will complete outside reading in The Story of the World Volume 3 and come to class for discussions, activities, and craft projects related to the reading.  Parents will receive regular notices of additional online resources to enhance their history study.

Intermediate History
Early Modern History: Part One (1600-1720)
Ages 10 and up

Tuesdays:  September 20th to December 29th, no class Oct. 11th and Dec. 6th (12 classes)  
2:00pm-2:50pm
  (plus 30-60 minutes a week in an online classroom)
Location: Discovery Learning Center, 411 Roxas St., Santa Cruz

In this class for older history students we will study early modern era world history using The Story of the World Volume 3 as our guide.  Students will need to provide their own copy of the book or the audio CDs.  In this hybrid class, students will complete outside reading in The Story of the World Volume 3 and other given resources.  We'll summarize and discuss the readings using interactive forums in an online classroom at homeschoolworkshop.com.  In addition, students will find links to related internet material in the online classroom.  Class time will be used for the creation of 3D graphic organizers, extending online discussions, and occasional simulations and art projects related to the era.  This class will require more critical thinking, reading, and writing than the 8-10 year old class.

Exploring Non-Fiction
Ages 10 and up

Tuesdays: September 20th to November 1st, no class October 11th  (6 classes)

Location: Discovery Learning Center, 411 Roxas St., Santa Cruz

In this class we'll explore different non-fiction writing styles including narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive writing. Students will wrote short pieces in each style.  Some writing outside of class may be required.

Introduction to Chemical Analysis
Ages 10 and up

Tuesdays: November 8th to December 20th, no class Dec. 6th (6 classes)

Location: Discovery Learning Center, 411 Roxas St., Santa Cruz

This class is an excellent introduction to chemical analysis, even for students with no chemistry background. We'll follow simple flowcharts to separate mixtures, observe safe interactions between household substances, compare pH, and more.
