Il gruppo Spajazzy si forma a Boston nel 1997. Il nucleo fondatore è costituito dal batterista barese Sergio Bellotti (primo e unico docente italiano di batteria del Berklee College of Music) e il bassista salernitano Tino D’Agostino (direttore musicale della band).

Spajazzy collabora live e in studio con artisti importanti quali Bob James, Tom Scott, Andrea Bocelli, Wayne Krantz, Harvey Mason e Nathan East, per citarne alcuni.

Alla radice del progetto c’e il desiderio di fondere i suoni e gli idiomi della tradizione Jazz statunintense  con  il background melodico e compositivo della tradizione musicale italiana: il nome della band evoca ironicamente questa fusione.

Il primo Cd, che vede la partecipazione di Mike Stern alla chitarra, viene accolto e con grande entusiasmo dalla stampa mondiale e Spajazzy, con Jim Kelly alla chitarra e Steve alle tastiere, intraprende numerosi concerti in Italia, Svizzera, Canada e Stati Uniti. Le composizioni  e arrangiamenti di Spajazzy fanno parte della biblioteca musicale “Stan Getz” di Boston, le esibizioni live portano la band al Montreal Drum Festival, al Groove Day di Milano, allo storico club 55 di NYC, il Berklee Performance Center e il Ryles di Boston, etc.

Il suono della band viene descritto dalla stampa statunitense (Modern Drummer, JazzTimes)  come un “jazz elettrico dal sapore italiano”. 

Spajazzy si esibisce in formato trio classico con pianoforte/tastiere (Steve Hunt, Frank Wilkins) e in quartetto o quintetto con chitarra, sax o tromba (Mark Greel, Rocco Ventrella, Bill Vint, Mark Nomad).

Spajazzy and "friends" colorano il Jazz di tante sfumature e armonie che trovano consensi tra gli appassionati di Jazz e anche, in generale, tra gli amanti della buona musica : “Beautiful Melodies supported by strong grooves ”
