| Welcome to Space Helmet Records! You have come to the Space Helmet Records website, home to the music of the Sonic Disruptors, the Memetic Terrorists, DJ Space Helmet, and all the music projects of singer/songwriter/etc. Dennis Jernberg. The Origin of Space Helmet RecordsBack in November 2007, Space Helmet Records founder Dennis Jernberg was writing his novel Bad Company for National Novel Writing Month (to sum up: write 50,000 words in November, and you're a winner). A month later, NaNoWriMo headman Chris Baty sent an email to all "wrimos" about the various NaNo-inspired contests. Among them was February Album Writing Month, or FAWM. The next year, Jernberg decided he wanted to try it out. He wrote nothing. Even when the related challenge 50 Songs in 90 Days (50/90) came around in July, he couldn't write anything. Things sure change, don't they. Comes 2009, and he finds himself with a Casio WK-200 keyboard with USB MIDI interface which his mother gave him for Christmas. Then as FAWM approached once again, he downloaded some free music creation software he thought would help him in his struggle to actually write some songs. Suddenly, the dam burst, and he got off to a roaring start in his first real FAWM. Since he felt his songs had to be recorded for all the world to hear, he founded Space Helmet Records and set up this site to host his music. About the name: Back when he was in school, Jernberg was always the weird kid. In high school, he struck the jocks and stoners as so weird that they called him "Space Helmet." Years later, when the World Wide Web became all the rage, he took the onetime insult as a handle, like the CB radio handle he once had. So when he started this site, he knew at once which name he would use for it. NOTE: There is a rock journalist in Sweden who goes by the same name. He and I are not the same person and might not even be distantly related; do not be confused. FAWM 2009: Big Success!SHR head honcho Dennis Jernberg recently took part in this year's FAWM. After his 2008 failures in both FAWM and 50/90, he was pleasantly surprised to find he had written 38 songs ranging in quality from good to awesome, and he recorded demos for 24 of them. All of them are listed in the margin to the left, and you can listen to them by clicking the links. Enjoy! |
