  STUDENTS OF WOMEN STUDIES
(SOWS)
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON!
This website is for Women Studies majors and all people interested in Feminism and Women Studies at the University of Washington. It is a safe space where individuals can get connected and learn about SOWS and Women Studies department events, meetings, grassroots organization, group and department activities, support and discussion groups, rallies, protests, classes, and everything else in-between. It is essential that students of Women Studies and self identified Feminists, and allies of Feminism have a space where unity and community building can occur, which can ultimately spark greater change and tolerance in the world!
SOWS Mission:
-
SOWS is a student organization developed by students for students, which believes in a grassroots movement towards greater social and political change on a micro and macro level within society. SOWS believes that each and every student has a powerful and meaningful voice that should be heard by all within the academic institution of the University and society in general. SOWS also aims to help Women Studies students navigate the bureaucratic and patriarchal structure of the University, so that each student can comprehend the inner workings of the department and have a community where they can turn to. SOWS encourages students to flex their activist muscles and act as strong political forces to help transform unequal, social, and political dynamics within the bounds of the University and in the community as well. SOWS is a safe space that provides undergraduates in the Women Studies department with resources to enhance one’s own education and personal enrichment as student activists.
SOWS Goals:
-
All undergraduate students in the Women Studies Department are provided with information and resources that will help them navigate their academic and activist path.
-
All undergraduate voices are heard throughout the hierarchical structure at the University of Washington
-
Student ideas and opinions are respected and are discussed in a fair manner
-
Students will be able to form a political and social community where Feminist and Women Studies ideologies are celebrated and respected
So What Exactly is Feminism?
- The radical phenomena that all human beings are equal and should be treated with equality and respect, regardless of race, class, gender, gender identity, sex, sexuality, religion, politics, nationality, ability, socioeconomic status, positionality, etc.
So What Exactly is Women Studies?
-
Women Studies provides a framework for the study of women’s and men’s lives, both
throughout history and in contemporary times. Women Studies encourages students
to intellectually understand the importance of class, race, sexuality, physical ability,
nationality, and gender, and to learn actively through community internships and by
contributing to ongoing movements for social change around the world.
