VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN THE 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR!

Volunteer and be a part of student success: Family involvement improves student success, regardless of race/ethnicity, social economics, or parent’s level of education.

Research shows that family involvement promotes student success. Students with involved parents are more likely to:

·       Earn higher grades and pass their classes

·       Attend school regularly & have better social skills

·       Go on to postsecondary education

When families, schools, and communities work together (National PTA):

·       Student achievement improves

·       Teacher morale rises

·       Communication increases

·       Family, school & community connections multiply

Some Volunteer Opportunities at South Shore:

A free homework club offered daily from 8:20am-8:50am. (Homework club will be broken up by grade level for K-8th grade students.)

·       Middle school zero hour/before-school academic support in math and reading on Monday and Tuesdays of each week.

·       ASC (After-school club) or OST (out of school time) Variety of opportunities!

·       Library restocking books (create your schedule, idea for parents who come early to pick up their student with 15-30 minutes to spare.

·       3-4 People to Level Books (volunteers will be trained) A large order of books arriving soon!

·       Math Challenge Board: only one hour per month and could be done any time that suits the person - a perfect job for a parent who can't get in during the school day.

Kids Co. created a morning homework club for 1st-8th graders.  This club program is extremely low cost ($35/year) and so far 60 students have signed up.  One problem though:  WE NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS!  NOT ONE PARENT HAS VOLUNTEERED FOR MORNING HOMEWORK CLUBS.  We are starting the clubs anyway, thanks to Kids Co. teachers, but for these clubs to continue we need parents to come forward to volunteer.  The time commitment is short: 8-9am Tuesdays-Fridays. You WE CAN’T do it without you.  You can volunteer for as many or as few days as you are able.  The more volunteers we have, the more 1 on 1 help our students will receive. We also need volunteers to help with our after school K-5 snack and book time from 3:10-3:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If you are available to volunteer, please contact John Benner IMMEDIATELY at (206) 725-8000 or at johnb@kidscompany.org  I  look forward to a great year of learning, in and out of school!
