Design Inspirations

Draw on the expertise of those in the magazine/ catalog/ graphic design business. Look at magazines, catalogs, websites, shower curtains, tissue boxes, CD covers, book jackets ... really look at the ones you like; what colours and colour combinations are used and how do they relate to each other; with pictures, look at them upside down or sideways to focus on the colours as opposed to the actual objects. Look at costumes and knitwear in movies for design details that appeal to you.

Here's an example of a Silhouette Cutout Preview (SCP) used to evaluate the colour combinations in a Harrowsmith magazine food article.

This is the original picture.

This SCP image results from the silhouette cutout being placed over a wallpaper picture in a magazine.

Here's an SCP using the cover of Harrowsmith magazine. The text showing through the right sleeve area could be translated into stripes and the larger colour sections of the sweater front can be translated into either colours or stitch designs.

Design sample source: Orange Gerbera daisies and green hydrangeas Canadian Living magazine Sep 07

This fun sample was created using bright coloured sticky note strips. Playing with samples like this allows experimentation with proportion and colour combinations.

This sample was created using the overlay on a wallpaper sample.
