Total 56 Species (RT) (SL) (AS) Kirkby Moor Walk 31/07/10 The walk began at 9.30 am was being led by Neil Smith who gave a brief introduction of the reserve and explained that the visit to Kirkby Moor was a little later in the calendar than normal in anticipation of seeing more butterflies and dragonflies (and we were not to be disappointed). Having set off on a cloudy but warm morning on the track across the heath, it was not long before we had our first treat when the back markers caught sight of something slithering acrsoss the path. We all went back and Neil revealed to all that it was a slow worm which of course is lizard without legs and not a worm at all. Not being squeamish, Neil picked it up so everyone could see it in detail and feel its skin which is actually quite dry and it obligingly flicked its tongue out in a totally lizard-like way. Neil explained it was half full grown in terms of length and thickness ( for the mathematically minded this will give it 1/8 full size volume). Having returned it to the path it said its farewell by slithering off into the heather. Onwards we went and Neil said we would leave the heath and enter the reed area which was bordered by wild flowers with trees on the other side of the path. Having barely entered the area we were immediately treated to sights of flowers and butterflies which were identified by our experts Sandra and Neil respectively. A southern hawker was soon sighted and located with a telescope on a branch for all to see. By now Beryl and Mike had eyed my random jottings of the species seen and were in awe of how I would be able to decode this for neat. Nevertheless on entering the read area proper more sightings came thick and fast. For several of us there were lifetime firsts and we able to get pictures and views of an array of restless dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies and moths sampling the nectar on the flowers. Highlights that everyone enjoyed were brown argus and white admiral butterflies along with the southern hawker, a couple of ever delightful treecreepers moving up the tree trunks and 2 great spotted woodpeckers in the bare branches of a rotting tree. We returned to the heath area to make tracks back towardse the car park to b e greeted by the first very slight precipation of the day. Having amazed everyone with his wildlife idenfication skiils during the leisurely near 3 hour guiided walk, Neil was then himself put in the place of the learner when Sandra had to explain to him that we all know such moisture falling from the air as 'mizzle'. Neil and I put together a list of species seen by the group and in the main categorie there were 22 sorts of birds, 13 butterflies, 2 moths and 7 dragoflies/damselflies plus the slow worm and a young adder which was briefly sighted at the head of the group before disappearing. At the end of the walk everyone thanked Neil for a most interesting walk before dispersal, save for 5 hungry souls led by Beryl and Mike who retired to the Ebingdon Arms at Kirkby on Bain for lunch for an excellent meal including free dessert on the house due to the waiter forgetting to put half the main orders in initially as he forgot he had written them on the back of his order slip. Both walk and pub are highly recommended for next year! The full list of species of bird seen were jackdaw, treecreeper, reed warbler, house martin, woodpigeon, coal tit, carrion crow, green woodpecker, great spottted woodpeckeer, swallow, chiffchaff, chaffinch, bullfinch, jay, blue tit, wren, yellowhammer, little owl, whitethroat, blackcap, kestrel and robin . Butterflies were gatekeeper, smallcopper, small skipper, common blue, ringlet, meadow brown, large white, green-veined white, brown argus, white admiral, speckled wood, holly blue and large skipper. Dragonflies were brown hawker, southern hawker, common darter and emerald darter. Damselflies were azure blue, common blue and blue-tailed. Moths were silver-y and common footman. Other insects of note were soldier beetle and white-tailed bumblebee. A scarlet pimpernel was a first time flower for some. Finally there was grey squirrel, adder and slow worm.16th May 2010 - Sightings - Denton Farming Co Common Buzzard; Whitethroat; Yellowhammer; Long-tailed Tit; Chaffinch; Swift; Blackcap; Song Thrush; Pheasant Red-legged Partridge; Chiffchaff; House Martin; Starling; Robin; Hobby (2); Wood Pigeon; Sparrowhawk; Dunnock Blue Tit; Bullfinch; Pied Wagtail; Mallard; Wren; Lesser Whitethroat (1); Nuthatch; Marsh Tit (3); Great Tit; Jackdaw Mute Swan; Canada Goose; Great-crested Grebe; Tufted Duck; Coot; Moorhen; Red Kite (4); Carrion Crow.
