Academic Opportunities
The Centre Fellows Scholarship Program The Centre Fellows Scholarship Program is an innovative approach to recognizing and rewarding some of the nation's brightest, most involved young people. This scholarship program is made possible by gifts from Centre alumni who want to enable outstanding students to attend the College. Centre Fellows is simply a scholarship program—there is no event on campus related to it, nor is there any cost. It's just our way of attracting the interest of talented juniors throughout the country. When a student is nominated by the high school counselor and chooses to become a Centre Fellow, he or she is guaranteed a minimum scholarship level of $12,500 per year. Students must be nominated by the high school counselor, not parent, etc. A Centre Fellow can certainly win a higher scholarship, but at least he or she will get $12,500. It's really a good deal that requires no commitment on the student's part! Requirements for nomination are: · Top 5% of junior class · Taking a strong college preparatory curriculum · Have an SAT verbal and math score of 1250 (PSAT 125) or better or an ACT score of 28 (PLAN 26) or better · Actively participate in school, community or church activities · NOTE: Each high school can only nominate 2 young men and 2 young women. See your counselor by April 15th if you want to be considered for nomination. To learn more about this opportunity, please contact your counselor or visit: www.centre.edu WKU Gatton Math and Science Academy Each year the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky selects 60 Kentucky students who apply during their sophomore year and are awarded admission based on standardized test scores, grades, responses to essay questions, recommendations, and personal interviews. Instead of spending their junior and senior years in traditional high schools, students enroll in the Gatton Academy and live in a uniquely dedicated Gatton Academy residence hall, and take courses offered by WKU. Their classmates are fellow Gatton Academy students and WKU undergraduate students. At the end of two years, Gatton Academy students will have earned at least 60 college credit hours in addition to completing high school. Academy graduates may choose to stay at WKU or transfer to other universities to complete their bachelor’s degrees. Visit online: http://www.wku.edu/academy/

CONTESTS
2009 Photo-Essay Competition Preserving the Spirit of Home To celebrate Preservation Month in May 2009, the Kentucky Heritage Council and Preservation Kentucky, Inc. are pleased to announce the Photo-Essay Competition for all Kentucky school students. This year’s theme will be Preserving the Spirit of Home. Students should select an older building, site or structure in their community and reflect on how its preservation helps to maintain a unique character for the community. Historic buildings often make us feel at “home” and hold memories that contribute to the unique spirit of a place. Students may want to discuss how a certain historic building makes them feel at home, or how the loss of a historic building has or could create a loss in their community spirit and sense of place. Due: March 16, 2009 For application and more information visit: www.preservationkentucky.org
