Favorite Things that Happen While Commuting:
- Seeing the beauty of a sunrise while pedaling in
- Saying good morning to regular early morning walkers along the way
- Looking at Christmas decorations during December

- Has found enjoyable routes to commute in several places
- Horseheads to Corning 15-20 miles
- Big Flats to Corning 8-12 miles
- Chelmsford, Mass to Bedford, Mass 9 miles - and this suburban commute time was similar to driving
- Kakegawa, Japan to Osuka-cho, Japan 12-15 miles
- Taichung (Evergreen Hotel) to Taichung Science Park 8 miles. This urban commute was almost always faster than by car. On Friday afternoon he was about 30 minutes faster. It was also fun to race the scooters. The ones in bad tune threw black smoke out their exhaust but were easy to surpass.
- Planning to commute from Osaka Hyatt Hotel to Sakai City project site. 8.5 miles urban bikeway/sidewalk riding. He will be very disappointed if he is slower than the 45-60 minute car drive.
- Most locations have showers. He carries one pannier with laptop, lunch, and business casual clothing.
- If there are no showers near work, he showers before riding and brings a washcloth and cleans up in the bathroom. This even worked in tropical Taiwan with its 80 F heat during the dawn commute.
- Hotels have always been willing to store his bike and case for his next visit.
Depending on daylight and weather, Dave rides from Towanda to Sayre a couple times per week. Round trip is possible in the summer months. This commute is about 70 minutes each way. Key things are to have a neighbor/friend to catch a ride one-way with, to have showers, and bike parking at work. |
