Skulls Kick Off Carnival 2009 with cocktails, movie, dinner and bar night!
(February 7, 2009/Mobile, AL)
An Ambitious Evening... While the rest of Mobile watched The Pharaohs parade Saturday night, in a dark theater on Dauphin Street, the Southern Renegades and friends received a history lesson... Hollywood style. The Skulls took in the 6 pm showing of "MILK" at the new Crescent Theater. When the suggestion was made via e-mail, the response was overwhelming and immediate. YOU definately wanted to see this movie... and so we did. Bob at Visions on Dauphin Street invited the Renegades and friends to stop by and gather at the bar. It's about a block from the theater. More than a dozen skulls did, and a bunch more caught up with the gang at the theater, bringing the skull count to about 20. After the show, it was off to dinner at Wintzell's before continuing on to the Midtown Pub for a Mardi Gras bar night,"Revelers Rogues and Renegades".
First Stop:
COCKTAILS at VISIONS
(Above) To see an important film with huge social content and historic perspective, one must be in the proper frame of mind. So meeting for cold adult beverages at Visions on Dauphin wasn't just a pleasure, it was an obligation.
(Below, left) Jimmie dreams of being just like John and Carrol (right). And who wouldn't?
(Below, left) Sensing a camera is present, Rafael and Darwin strike a conventional pose that fools no one. (Right) John attempts to shed his frivolous mood to prepare for tonight's serious motion picture. Meanwhile, Carrol suddenly realizes where he is.
Second Stop:
MILK- The Movie
It's Grandtabulous!
(Below) Some of those who waited for Sean Penn's arrival. Brian (far right) thought he saw him, but it was someone from Metro. That'll work.

(Above) The New Crescent Theater is a welcomed addition to Mobile's Dauphin Street entertainment district. Support them. Watch a minimum of 12 movies there each week. OK, eight. | Third Stop:
DINNER at WINTZELL'S
(Above) Table for 15, please. But there wasn't one. So they made one in an effort to keep us from contaminating the entire restaurant. The girls should be here any minute.
Be Sure to Tip Your Waiter (But ask him first)
(Above, left) Jimmie contemplates seafood, while his shirt clearly indicates he prefers beef. (Center) It only take Terry a matter of minutes to discover his favorite. (Right) He'll have chicken, of course. To go.
(Below) Overheard Conversation:
Jeff: "My, that's awfully BIG! How do you expect me to handle all of THAT?" Waiter Bob: "I've never seen anyone get so excited about Melba Toast." (Wasn't she in Dreamgirls?)

Fourth Stop:
THE MIDTOWN PUB-
Revelers, Rogues & Renegades
(Above) The bar was full, the lights were low, and that was even before WE arrived! That's where we also discovered...
The Art of Joe Butler
(Below) Mobile artist Joe Butler (right) has kept his sketch pad busy these days, preoccupied with the male form. One of them happens to be John Cauley, Mr. Southern Renegade/Mobile & Mr. Louisiana Leather 2009. Looks like Joe nailed him...
You can usually find Joe's art on display at The Midtown Pub.
Thanks to Visions, The Crescent, The staff of the Midtown Pub, and the patient and handsome wait staff at Wintzells for a fantastic kick off to Mardi Gras 2009!
