The Green Club meets every Thursday after school.
The mission of the Green Club is to:
- Learn about gardening and growing food
- Learn about conserving our natural resources
- Practice recycling and encourage others to recycle
- Learn about green building technologies such as solar and wind energy, sustainable building materials and techniques
So far the green club has:
- Re-established a recycling program at Southern by encouraging classrooms to separate materials that can be recycled (paper, aluminum, cardboard and plastic)
- Constructed two grow lights
- Started vegetable plants from seeds
- Constructed two raised-bed gardens
- Transplanted our seedlings into the raised-beds
- Used a 300-gallon rainwater collection system to water our garden
- Harvested some of our basil and made pesto (yum!)
In the future we hope to:
- Expand our garden
- Include technology such as solar panels to power lights and pumps
- Repair or replace the weather station located on the school roof
- Beautify the school grounds by planting trees and shrubs
- Encourage students and faculty to eat more healthy foods
- Design and paint a sign for our garden area: "A Southern Garden"
- Encourage teachers to integrate "green" projects with their subject
- Build an outdoor classroom for teachers to use with their students
