The 2011 Sourton Scramble took place on 29th October using the same mixed-terrain course as last year. There was a good turnout of over 80 runners ready to face the 10.6Km main race in chilly but good running conditions. Whilst the course was wet in places, the previous days fine weather meant that underfoot conditions where good and all 80 runners completed the course. As in previous years, there was a good showing from local, and some not so local, running clubs with Okehampton Running Club and Bude Rats particularly well represented. Dan Rodgers (Launceston Running Club), was first home in a great time of 42:44, over a minute in front of the rest. Scramble regular, Andy Vallance (Okehampton Running Club, 43:52) was pushed all the way to the line by 3rd placed James Trubridge (Unaffiliated, 43:54) from Bodmin. First lady home and 7th overall in a fabulous time of 46:24 was Jo Meek (Tavistock Athletics Club). Second lady was Helen Heard (Bude Rats, 51:00) and 3rd, Karen Skye (Okehampton Running Club, 53:03). Other award winners where Tim Pratt (27th 53:42), first local (Sourton & Bridestowe Parish) home, Peter Mander (Launceston Road Runners, 69:21) who was Senior Finisher and a Youth Achievement award for Harrison Baker who at 15 years old, finished 10th overall in a time of 48:25. Age category winners where George Speak (Okehampton Running Club, 46:20) as first male youth, Katie Littlejohns (Unaffiliated, 58:29) first female youth, Richard Drage (Tavistock Athletics Club, 44:07) Over 50's male, Anne Darby (Newton Abbott Athletics Club, 56:26) Over 50's female and Martin Leach (Bedford Harriers, 58:07) Over 60's male. In the fun run, first home was Brandon Horn with brother Leon 2nd. First female home was Taeli Baker and 2nd, Amy Pearce. Andy Ewen from 2011 main sponsor Okehampton Glass started the race a presented the prizes. A special mention was made to Julian Tompkins from Crediton who completed the race in the very respectable time of 76:54 having had a Kidney transplant in January. Julian who ran around with his son Toby, has caught the running bug having run a race to raise money for a charity a few weeks ago. Julian remarked after the race, "as I went over the top of Sourton I looked up and thanked my donor as I felt closer to him!". Thanks where extended to race organisers, Alison Ewen and Alison Horn for another well organised and enjoyable race. They in turn thanked Sponsors, Marshalls, Safety Runners and other helpers, without whom the race would not be possible. All proceeds will be divided between Sourton Church, Sourton Parish Hall and Bridestowe Cricket Club. Full results are available on the web site https://sites.google.com/site/sourtonscramble/. |
