Phase 2 National

Overview

This phase begins on 21 March 2010 and sees the emergence of sound fragments beyond Sanderson Contemporary Art and around New Zealand in other galleries.

What sound fragments in other galleries will look like

Sound fragments in galleries around New Zealand will follow the theme of the sound fragments found in the primary supporting gallery. They will become increasingly complex in composition the further they are from the focal point in the primary supporting gallery.

How sound fragments will be created and distributed to other galleries

Sound fragments will be created and posted to galleries as they sign up. They will be prints on vinyl and may be displayed in any part of the gallery as long as it is visible to gallery visitors.

How time zones are distributed across New Zealand

The map below illustrates how time zones will relate to New Zealand. The time zones are proportioned in accordance with the Golden Ratio similarly to the time zones in Phase 1. It is interesting to note that in Phase 1 the proportioning of the time zones was an unconscious act as opposed to the proportioning of time zones in Phase 2 and Phase 3 which were a conscious act.

The timings associated with each time zone builds on the idea explored in Phase 1. The focal point is the musician from which sound fragments emanate from the musician’s performance. In Phase 1 the performance lasts for 5 minutes and 20 seconds, and in Phase 2 the performance continues from 5 minutes 20 seconds to 2 hours, 46 minutes, and 40 seconds. It is envisaged that there be at least one sound fragment per time zone during Phase 2.

Time zones are in minutes and seconds as follows:

  • Time zone 6: 00:02:07 - 00:03:25
  • Time zone 7: 00:03:26 - 00:05:33
  • Time zone 8: 00:05:34 - 00:09:00
  • Time zone 9: 00:09:01 - 00:14:35
  • Time zone 10: 00:14:35 - 00:23:36
