Sound Fragments is Shannon's latest study in his ongoing exploration of the link between colour, sound, and emotion - a study that examines sound as fragments exploding outward from a focal point. In this instance, the focal point sits within Sanderson Contemporary Art - a gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. The focal point represents a musician who through the act of performing music emanates ‘sound fragments’ made up of a musical note or notes drawn from an octave of twelve semitones. Musical notes are coloured by the positive or negative emotional state the musician is in as they are performed. Therefore within each sound fragment there exists a tension between what may be easy to measure (musical note) and what may not be so easy to measure (the emotional state). Through a unique blend of geometric forms and vibrant colours, the installation exposes the sound fragments in their raw and simple beauty. The installation will grow over time, sound fragments moving beyond Sanderson Contemporary Art and into galleries around New Zealand and beyond. The proceeds made from the sale of all sound fragments will go to a non-profit organisation that supports art and artists as chosen by the gallery representative.
