Many people are not aware that Advent was originally from 22 to 28 days long , not the usual 25 days. This was because the days of Advent changed with the Christian calendar of celebrating Christian holy days .Advent consists of the days leading up to the celebration of Christ's birth , not the coming of a jolly round man in a red suit. Like many activities of Christmas , the Advent calendar has been changed for commercial reasons ( some advent calendars even state that they are for the countdown of shopping days left until Christmas day ! A good starting point for the Christmas season , Advent calendars help make the days up to Christmas special . They can be candy or tiny items , puzzle pieces that will make a complete puzzle on Christmas , special notes , jokes and riddles , parts of a Nativity scene , and other creative items. For celebrating the real meaning of Christmas , put verses from the Bible that tell the story of Jesus birth (along with a treat !).Here are some ideas to get started :
This calendar is made of brown ( paper-bag) type paper !
Here is a calendar made from cardstock . A much cheaper version can be made with the cardboard from cereal and other food container boxes . Just cut the boxes apart and use the blank side to paint/sticker/marker festive designs. TINY CARDS WITH SPECIAL MESSAGES
This is a TP Christmas tree advent calendar . The picture is a bit confusing on this site . There aren't 25 sections ! You can easily fix that by putting your tube pieces in a tree pattern , or any other pattern that you like , such as a star , a bell or a manger.Also , I would use tissue paper over the tubes by putting a whole sheet over the top of all the tubes and trim around the edge so that you get the shape of a tree ( You could also rub the side of a crayon that had the paper peeled off over the tissue paper and get an outline of all the tolet paper tubes to form your selected shape). Then I would print numbers above each tube. This is more of a punch-board type calendar and has the fun element of surprise .

Here is a beautiful site with a tutorial for cute paper Christmas ornament , crafts , printable and more. It is Christian oriented . It takes a while to load ( at least on my slow computer !) , but it is worth it . Don't overlook the clickable graphics in the right sidebar.
I am venturing out of my comfort zone and trying some polymer clay projects . Here are some nice projects and a tutorial that teaches how to work with the clay.

Recipe cards are always a nice gift. You can give blank cards , or better yet, cards with favorite recipes to share. Maybe with a sample of one of the recipes too!
Another type of recipe card maker. This one has a picture of the recipe on one side and the recipe on the other side . It is actually a gift card ! You bake the recipe and attach this card for presenting to the recipient.

I made these little wreath cookies last year. They were the cheapest and easiest to make of all the treats that I made , and everyone said that they liked these the best !
Here is another bar cookie that is easy to make . It has apricots as one of the ingredients. These may be a little expensive , but if you have a bulk food store or a food co-op near where you live , you can get them a little cheaper.
