Preface - December 2009 - The Journey Begins. Ok, the journey's not really begun, the journey doesn't realistically begin until the 1st of January, however I know that while we all slowly start to submit to the temptations of Christmas, the good intentions are already there. Ofcourse the intentions haven't quite yet transferred into the ability to resist the calling of mince pies and festive snacks, but they are there, and let's face it, for this time of year, having the foundations in place is more than a positive situation to be in. Simply by clicking on this website and reading as far down as this you have taken the first step, the first step to whatever your own personal weight loss or training goals are, and, as much a we may belittle the idea of taking credit for such a small action, as the old saying goes, we can only take one step at a time, and this, like all the other steps (which you don't need to worry about yet), is as valid as any. Obviously, in my experience as a personal trainer, I've been lucky enough to be a part of many an induvidual's journey down the scales so to speak, and whilst I'm fortunate enough to work in a fairly affluent part of London, surrounded by intelligent, motivated and successful people, I am continually surprised by, in this day and age of easily accessable information, people's ignorance and mis-understanding of nutrition and training, especially in relation to weight loss. The sad situation in gyms these days seems to be that there are a few that can, but eve more than a few who just never will. As hard as they try, as much as they sweat and as hard headed they try to be, it just doesn't happen. Now, of course, that's great for the gym, because they make their money, very much like most people in the weight loss industry, from failure. The more people fail, the less they turn up, and the less they turn up, the less it costs the business. People sign up for a year, full of hope, train for a couple of months without any long standing results, and, just as always, slowly filter away, never to be seen again. What's remarkable about this is, that in relation to fitness, even the most intelligent and astute of these failed people seem to have the memory of a goldfish, and despite failing again and again, return in their shoals every new year to repeat the same procedure, with naturally the same results. People aren't stupid though, it would be insane to repeat the same procedure every year, return to the same gym, full of hope, speak to the same sales person, have the same conversation, sign the same deal with the same intentions, go to the same fitness instructor, bore him with the same request as the year before (without any sense of irony ofcourse), and jump on the same treadmill doing the same amount of work, still going nowhere. People aren't stupid, people are just mis-guided. They always change something, they always manage to create a reason, a truthfully honest reason in their head why this year, this year as opposed to the last ten, this year will be the one. Maybe they go to the gym closer to their house, or maybe they go to the gym closer to their work. They could sign up to a gym because it's got a certain class, or because it's got a pool, or they might even sign themselves up to be shouted at in the local park by an ex-Army sergeant on a Sunday morning, because ofcourse how could you not get fit with a post traumatically stressed marine shouting at you. Please, please, please stop this. It's not going to work. There's no reason why it should work. As a personal trainer with a fair few years in the industry, I know that when one of these guys come to me and ask me for adivce on how to lose weight, they're not really asking for advice, they're don't really want to hear the truth, in fact they want to hear anything but the truth. They will listen to any hair brained scheme, try any diet, any workout, take any supplement, literally jump through hoops just to avoid the simple fact that weight loss is very basic, but (here's the difficult bit), there are no shortcuts, there aren't neccesarily rewards when you think you deserve them, hard work doesn't always pay, and, worst of all, there is no hidden secret, no hidden gem, no one thing that all the trainers in the past have simply forgot to mention. Your thing. Your personal thing. That one thing that foolishly has been overlooked triggering years of failed attempts and un-requited effort. There is good news however. The good news is that there is a method and it's not impossible. There are choices to make and they're not difficult. There are sensible ways to train, and you don't have to be an Olympic athlete. Infact, a healthy lifestyle and healthy body has been achieved by millions of people worldwide, and just by following a few simple rules, there's no reason why it can't be achieved by many more. Now the original blueprint of the Soul Active Project was to make public and promote the energy, knowledge and resources that we have collected from years and years of experience in the industry. Training, motivation, music and knowledge is our mantra, and as we enter into the new year we are going to direct our efforts and thoughts into making weight loss and fitness available for all. There is no better time of year to start this journey together, and over the next few weeks will bring you updates and direction to aid you in your own personal challenges, whether it be a sporting, fitness or purely weight loss goal. We have the music, we have the motivation, and if you have the will power, following a few simple rules, and with just a little bit dedication to your cause, there's no reason why today you can start to be the habit of making the correct, logical choices to find that energised, confident state that we all seek. Each week we will provide you with more and more tools that you need to make these choices and inspire to continue on this journey together. It won't be easy, though it won't be impossible too and all we ask of you is to spread the word, promote the site - www.soulactive.co.uk - and check in each week using all the updates and resources we can make available to you, to make this year, the year. Enjoy your week, enjoy your Christmas. The work will come, so enjoy this time while you have it, and, from all of us at the Soul Active Project, we hope you have a great one and look forward to working with you next year.
