What is "The Sou"? The ‘Sou’ gives financial support to extracurricular activities, school outings, and materials for all classes … Become a member! The money earned through our activities is not sufficient to cover the needs of all classes. Your annual contribution is thus essential. Membership fee is 18 Euro per year and per family, tax deductible. | What can I do ? There are many ways of making a small contribution: You like handicraft, preparing pastries, be in touch with other people ? Have you sometimes an hour or two free during school hours? Or in the evening ? Have you an idea on how to collect funds ? Yes, but … I am working ! Don’t worry, we are all working during the day! But if we are more people, the job becomes easier for each of us. |
Since the early days of the Third Republic and the establishment of laicité (beginning of 20th century), the term Sou des Ecoles
("school's penny") is used as the name of many local associations in
France who defend the quality and equal access to public education by
raising funds for the well-being of pupils (teaching materials,
extracurricular activities, canteens etc.)
The Sou des Ecoles Florian in Ferney-Voltaire is the parents´ association of this school, funded in the 1970's. It is providing every year several thousand Euros to the Florian pre-school and primary school, for example to fund school excursions organised by the teachers in the framework of their pedagogical programme, to fund the purchasing of books for the school library and other complements to the teaching materials and leisure or sports events (spectacles, kayak, raquettes). The money is raised mainly through the sale of food & drinks and artwork at the occasion of city events (christmas market, Fête Voltaire), through the annual Loto (a kind of bingo / lottery), and through membership fees. The Sou is also organising jointly with the teachers the annual school summer party in June (Kermesse). For further information, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail or address one of the teacher a school who will direct you to a member of the association.
