Sorrento
had another mixed result, this time against the Princess Rd Tavern with
Division 2 winning a nail biter 6-5 and Division 3 going down gallantly
5 - 6. Division
2: Sorrento got off to a shaky start losing the first three games (the
teams game and the first two singles games) before steadying by winning
the last two singles games. A brilliant (78.80 average) doubles game by
Tom Barton, followed by a very solid doubles win by the Irish Connection
(Tim McNamara & Albert Sugrue) put Sorrento in front before the
reverse singles began. Sorrento again dropped the first two singles
games before Tim McNamara showed the form that has made him a 1st
Division player for most of his life by evening it up at 5 all. In a
nerve wracking game of "Captain versus Captain" saw Sorrento prevail and
sneak home for 6-5 win. Tom Barton again topped the averages with 67.57 (and a pair of Desmond Tutus)
while Tim McNamara had 63.41 and 5 pegs. Albert Sugrue, filling in for
the missing Tony Ing and Duncan Scott, weighed in with the top peg of 52
and a useful 51.70 average and 3 pegs. Thanks Albert. Division
3: Sorrento also got off to an ordinary start losing both of the
Triples games before fighting back with all three doubles games to lead
PRT into the singles with a 3 - 2 lead. But Princess Rd showed why they
are worthy contenders in the finals with three singles games in a row.
Alan Hutchison put in a blinder, including a 17 (or 18) dart 501, before
opposition player, Paul Burden did likewise with a 105 peg to put
Sorrento out of contention for the evening. Alan
Hutchison had the top peg for Sorrento of 65 and a monster 70.11
average and 3 pegs, Ricky Brades and John Stewart has solid averages of
56.61 and 52.73 respectively as well as picking up a Desmond Tutu and 33
feathers each. Newcomer Ian Moore continued to impress with his solid
scoring ability with 55.67. With
one qualifying match to go this season the finals are set, apparently
all to be held at Superoos HQ (Kingsway Football Club). Division 2 take
on the Bowling club over at their place, while Division 3 take on the
number one side in the Kingsley Tavern. This Thursday, 18 August. Div.2 away to Sorrento Bowling Club and Div.3 away to Kingsley. Action from 7.45pm. Contact Tony on 0402000181 for any other details/info. |

Sorrento
had a mixed result this week at Noise Central (Greenwood Hotel) with Division 2
having their second loss for the season while Division 3 cemented their place in
the finals with a fighting 6 -5 win against the fifth placed
team.
Division
2
Sorrento
was in trouble from the word go this week with a mix up between players that
found our "substitute", Albert Sugrue, having to drop back to Division 3 in the
absence of Alan Hutchison. Playing one short, at short notice, threw us out of
kilter and if it were not the fighting effort by Tom Barton, who picked up his
best performance for the season with 70.39 average and 5 pegs, Sorrento would
barely have troubled the scorers going down ignominiously 2 - 9. Greenwood
played very well and were pretty happy to beat us for first time this season. We
will be playing Greenwood in the first final in three weeks time. So we will
look forward to having a full team again.
Division
3
Sorrento
had an important win against Greenwood and it was on the back of sterling
performances by newcomer Ian Moore with 57.07 average and 3 pegs, Albert Sugrue
with his best performance of the season 54.07 average and 3 pegs and a real
"gutsy win" by John Stewart in the deciding last game (51.36 and 2 pegs). Albert
managed to also pick up the "33 feathers" and "Desmond Tutu" awards while Vic
Morrison and John Stewart contributed a couple of Mars
Bars.
Next
week's game is at home for both sides against the Princess Road
Tavern.

It
was a return to winning form for the Division 2 team against arch-rivals
Sorrento Bowling Club and a painful loss for Division 3 against the top team
Kingsley.
Division
2
Sorrento
got off to a good start winning the team game thanks to clean one dart peg by
Tony Ing and singles wins to Duncan Scott and Tim McNamara took Sorrento to a 3
- 2 lead. The turning point in what was a fairly tight game came with convincing
doubles wins took Sorrento to 5 - 2 lead going in to the reverse singles before
Duncan Scott put the game out of reach the Bowling club.
Highlights
were the doubles game by Tim McNamara and Tony Ing which tipped the odds in
Sorrento's favour. The opposition player, Mal Gray, who had his best game of the
season, beating Tim Wills in the first singles and Tim McNamara in the reverse
singles took the top peg honours with 96. Tim Wills had a personal best average
for the season of 78.28 with five pegs and a 14 dart 501. Duncan Scott had 55.29
and 4 pegs and Tim McNamara 55.62 and 3 pegs.
Duncan
and Tony both picked up a Mars bar for their trouble.
Division
3
Sorrento
were blown away by a very determined Kingsley Tavern who won all the Triples and
Doubles games and took the first singles game to be 6 - 0 up before legendary
champion Ricky Brades, the Surgeon, put a stop to the rot by winning his
singles. Vic Morrison and Wim Van Houwelingen (playing against Mr (E). Kidner)
put some respectability back into the score line by winning their singles games
as well.
John
Stewart took out the top average for Sorrento with 55.67, Vic Morrison was next
best with 49.63 and two pegs. As could be expected Kingsley took most of the
highlights with the star player A. O'Sullivan (66.8) putting on a good show and
R Oates (58.07), got the highest peg of 71 (against Albert Sugrue in the last
singles game of the night). There was an abundance of Desmond Tutu's and 33
feathers fluttering through too many to mention but mercifully no Mars
Bars.
Next
game is at home against with both sides taking on the Girrawheen Tavern
sides.
Tim
Wills participated in the annual West Coast v Fremantle Derby on Saturday (which
West Coast lost unfortunately). It didn't start well, with the bus arriving an
hour and a half late, so that when West Coast finally got to the Coolbellup
Tavern the Freo players had well and truly warmed up. It was a good fun day in
the end and the highlight was getting Vic Morrison (wearing the Fremantle
colours) with Cauliflower Ears. Won't be turning my back on him anytime soon.
The return match is up at Kingsway on the 30th July so if you are interested in
playing put your name down for a good contest against the very friendly Freo
players.

Well who says that 13 is an unlucky number? Well, Round 13 proved to
fairly unlucky for both sides with Division 2 losing their first game of
the season
4 - 7 and Division 3 going down 5 - 6. Both sides lost to the Princess
Rd Tavern (PRT). It was a noisy and uncomfortable game and I can't
remember really doing well as a team at this venue. I'm sure some of the
more seasoned veterans might remember a time but I surely can't.
Division 2
I knew it was going to be a tough game against the PRT after the first
round at home. I knew it wasn't going to be easy especially after Tim
Wills first two throws ended up identical 38's. (Triple 1 on the wire of
the triple 20, triple 5 on the wire of the triple 20 and a single 20 on
the wire of the triple 20 - twice). Apart from that it was a high
quality game and we were definitely beaten by the better side on the
night. PRT had two stars absolutely burning brightly with Mark Nelson
(80.17 and 6 pegs) and Doug Pearce (72.06 and 4 pegs). The game went
evenly with Sorrento taking the teams game and two of the first singles.
The doubles was our undoing losing both games. Winning three out of the
last four was too great to hope for and losing 4 - 7 was a fairly
disappointing end.
Highlights from Sorrento were top of 66 and 3 pegs to Duncan Scott
filling in for the absence Tom Barton. It was great effort from Duncan
and he scored a massive 60% of his throw greater than 60. Tim Wills will
have to look long and hard to find a higher % shots > 60. Managed a
disappointing 63.80 and 4 pegs while Tim McNamara showed glimpses of
returning to his best form with the top peg of 85, 61.55 average and 3
pegs.
Division 3
Sorrento got off to fairly good start winning the two Triples games
thanks to John Stewart and Vic Morrison who put in outstanding
performances and one of the doubles games (Vic and Rick) to head into
the singles 3 - 2 up and with a good chance of taking a victory. It
wasn't to be, however, with pegs being missed by millimetres and in the
end Sorrento could only manage two of the six singles to go down
narrowly by 5 - 6.
Highlights were provided by Ricky Brades with a 52.41 average and a
clutch of feathers. Vic Morrison put in a solid performance with 51.85.
Wim Van Houwelingen put in a good singles game and Alan Hutchinson did
likewise with a 49.00 average.
Next week both sides are at home. Division 2 will be taking on the
Bowling Club, hopefully with more than 3 players this time, while
Division 3 host the number one side in the Kingsley Tavern.
Look forward to seeing you then. |

Sorrento
comfortably put the Greenwood threat aside until the next meeting with Division
2 winning 7 - 4 and Division 3 winning 8 - 3.
Division
2
From
the very first darts thrown in the match, fittingly by Tom Barton, Sorrento took
the lead, and after Tom pegged out on double 8 to win the first game of the
second singles, Sorrento had won the match. Tom finished with 5 pegs and a 67.14
average. Tony Ing put in another solid team performance taking out the dangerous
Alan Orton early in the match and following up with a good doubles win with Tim
McNamara, giving Sorrento the platform for an easy win. Tim Wills played fairly
ordinary scraping in a 60.24 average on the back of the top peg of 102 for the
night and five pegs from 17 darts. It was those 12 missed darts that cost Tim
the first round singles match against the Greenwood captain, "Buck" Rogers, for
the second time this season. Ironically he pegged out 102 against Tim in the
game at Greenwood. Unfortunately, Tim couldn't turn the tables but he looks
forward to the next opportunity.
Division
3
Sorrento
got off to a great start winning the two triples games and two out of three of
the doubles, and with singles wins from John Stewart, Vic Morrison, Ricky Brades
and Alan Hutchinson the game was never in doubt. Alan Hutchinson again topped
the averages with 60.71 and 4 pegs including the top peg for the night of 64.
Ricky Brades was showing off again with a 56.48 average and 3 pegs. John Stewart
and Vic Morrison with 51.13 and 51.09 respectively put in solid performances.
Albert, Wim and Alan took out the Desmond Tutu award with two 22's each.
Noticeably
when the inventor of the Tutu's, Vic Morrison, came over and watched Tim’s game,
he got one as well. Then he told Tim to: "Pick up your game "Hairy Legs", and
Tim did! Thanks Vic.
Next
week both teams are away and playing at the Princess Road
Tavern.
Division
2 will be without Tom Barton but as chance would have it Duncan Scott is back
for the time he is away.
Look
forward to seeing you then.

A
mixed week for Sorrento with an emphatic win against Warwick in Division 2 and a
disappointing loss to Cardinals #1 in Division 3.
Division
2:
In
our worst team performance of the year, Sorrento had a comprehensive 9 - 2 win
against a depleted Warwick side. As can be seen from the score line, Sorrento
took charge from the beginning and never looked like being threatened. It was a
solid win but we relaxed a little. Tom Barton showed another solid performance
with another 180, 6 pegs, 61.06 average. Duncan Scott flew in and flew out with
6 pegs and a 58.29 average. Tim Wills had his worst pegging night for a while
but managed 5 pegs (5 from 30 darts) and 58.43 average. Tim McNamara took out
the top peg of 84 for the night and provided most of the off-board
entertainment. Thanks to Tony Ing for doing the chalking and the team
support.
Division
3:
Sorrento
took on the third placed side Cardinals #1 up at Kingsway Olympic and never
really got started until after the triples and doubles saw them 4 - 1 down. Vic
Morrison and Ricky Blades (as listed on the scoresheet) led the way taking out
Stan Martin and Jim Welch respectively to give the side a slim chance of
stealing a win. Unfortunately, despite a gallant fight by all players with all
four games going to three legs, it just came down to narrowly missed
opportunities at pegs. Cardinals showed their character and held Sorrento off to
win 8 - 3. Highlights were a "Shanghai" on 20's (I'm guessing - Tripe 20, single
20 and double 20 - Shanghai) with a 120 peg by Alan Hutchinson, another 180 from
the "Machine", turn your lawn into grass, Victor Morrison, who also
topped
the
average for the night with 61.80.
Next
week's matches are at home against Greenwood, who seem to relish playing away
from their home venue. Both games will be important for finals opportunities. So
we, particularly in Division 2, will need to right on it from the words "Game
on".
Look
forward to seeing you then.

This
week both Sorrento sides had good wins against the odds. Division 2
playing one short again (with Tim McNamara off in Sydney and Duncan
Scott flying in and out) managed to pull off what ended up being a
comfortable 7 - 4 win against the Superoos. Division 3 would have
played one short as well but for Kerry Slater making his debut and as a
result they won 6 - 5 against the Deaf Club.
Division 2 continued its winning way with a solid team performance again. It
was off to a good start with Tony Ing getting the top peg for the night
with 90 in the Teams game, followed up by two good wins in the
Singles. Tom and Tim Wills won their doubles game easily while Tony had
to struggle through two against one in his game. That was followed by
three out of three possible reverse singles. Our cause was helped by the
ability to nominate which opposition player to eliminate in the singles
matches. Using this method Tim got rid of the opposition captain, Peter
Coaker, while he throwing hot in the early stages and, their best
player, Neil Dufall in the reverse singles. We
can laugh about that now but Tim felt pretty guilty at the time,
especially playing against their weakest player as a result. The
highlights were not that great but Tony Ing with five pegs and 48.74,
Tom Barton put in another solid performance again with 62.04 average
with two pegs and Tim managed the top average of 64.30 and six pegs. We
weren't without blemishes as we all got a couple of Desmond Tutus (22)
each, Tom picked up his first Mars Bar (3) while Tony would have had a
Mars Bar if he hadn't knocked two out of the board (1). Division
3 had more of a struggle for their victory and at one stage were 1- 4
down before coming through with five out of six singles wins. Leading
the way was Ricky Brades with three pegs and 47.03 average, while Alan
Hutchinson put in a great 68.53 and two pegs (looking like a recruit for
Division 2) and Vic Morrison with 58.08 and two pegs. The real credit
for the win goes however to the pressure game winners Wim Van
Houwelingen and none other than the debutant, Kerry Slater. Kerry
started off the match well with good scores in the triples and doubles
but found it a bit of struggle when it came to the singles, playing out a
nerve racking marathon to win his first game for Sorrento with the
"drunk's number" double three and similarly another marathon and a
double two to win the match. Vic Morrison contributed a Mars Bar for
the entertainment of the troops, Wim Van Houwelingen picked up a
"Clutch" of consecutive (33)feathers and Albert showed off the biggest
bust with 70 (54, double 11 instead of 54, double 8 - Bad luck Albert!) Next
week's games find Division 2 away at the Seven Mile Inn playing against
Warwick while Division 3 return to Kingsway Olympic to take on the
Cardinals #1 side. See you at the game or at the club beforehand. Contact Tony on 0402000181 for any other details/info. |

Sorrento managed
a comfortable win in the grand final against Scarborough #1 (6-3) (Note that in
finals it is first to six games which Sorrento did with Vic Morrison to play and
the teams game). There were plenty of highlights but unfortunately, and for a
reason that escapes me, there is no requirement to record the scores in the
final only the pegs. Tim Wills managed to get the most pegs (6), Vic Morrison
(3) Tony Ing and Duncan Scott (2 each). Vic Morrison managed to get his highest
peg of the season (120 - 20, 60, Double 20 Shanghai) in the doubles game with
Tony Ing who on the shot before busted the same score (60,double 20, double
15). It was a tight game most of the way and thanks to the astute captaincy of
Albert Sugrue, the number one player for Scarborough didn't get to play his
second singles game.
Due to illness
and injury Tim Wills didn't get to report on the previous game played against
Scarborough #1 which we lost 3 - 8. That was despite a fantastic effort by
Duncan Scott on the night with an average of 67.29 which included a 180, a
fifteen dart 501 and the top peg for the season of 120 (60, 20, double 20
Shanghai). Vic Morrison also managed to hit a 180 on the night as well but
other than that it was not so good. As our eternal optimist Tony Ing pointed
out, Scarborough beat us at home in the first round, we beat them at their home
ground in round 2 and they beat us again at home in the 3rd round, so it was our
turn to win away in the final, which was what happened exactly. What do you
know???
The end of the
season was topped off with a marathon, Harry Ashby Cup Round-robin tournament in
which the two Sorrento teams acquitted themselves very well, but narrowly missed
out on the final.
The final stats
for the season are attached and it is interesting to see the effect of the four
man competition on the averages. Our team average finished up at 54.52 which is
up by 0.92 on the Winter average. The singles average went down by 0.3? The
team game average went up by 1.0 and the doubles average went up by 3.0. Albert
had more shots in four games than he did in the seven games he played in the
winter competition. So, while it was good to play a bit more, it had little real
effect on the overall team performance and it makes me think that the six a side
format allows for more players to participate.
It was good to
win the Summer competition for the second year in a row but now we need to move
on to the Winter competition which starts again in early March (I think). We
need to meet this Thursday to decide what we are going to do. Two teams is the
probable model (One, four a side in Division 2 and one, six a side in Division 3
or 4 depending on who we can recruit). So come along next Thursday and have
your say at 7.45pm |

A disappointing result to lose a match 4 -7 that on paper we should have won. Superoos #1 got away to a good start and never looked like being brought back after what was apparently a lack lustre match even though Sorrento put up its best team average for the season so far with 56.30.
Opposition captain Peter Coaker played his best match for some time (against Duncan and Tim) and former Sorrento player Alan James was at his solid best averaging 64.61, six pegs including 133 (60,57,16) (again, unfortunately against Duncan and me). Three out of the four players from Superoos were former Sorrento/Glengarry players and it was a good fun night with lots of banter back and forth between us. That could have been the reason we didn't do so well. A bit too relaxed perhaps?
There were plenty of highlights on both sides, Vic Morrison hit his first 180 for the season and had six pegs for the night and Duncan took the top peg of 98, his best for the season so far. Tim Wills had the top average with 62.32 but it didn't too much good as he lost both singles games.
Ricky Brades took out the 33 feathers award with 4 lots and found a few new ways to get them when going for the 20's. After setting the pattern with Desmond Tutu's, Vic didn't get one but Duncan and Tim both shared the (dubious) honour with two each although Tim did get an extra 22 with a hundred in front of it.
Next game is at home against the Siciliani on Thursday, 25 November. Action starts at 7.45pm.
