There is a non-profit group at Belmont Estate teaching the local community how to raise goats and make goat cheese for sale. We will be heading to Belmont on October 2 to help with the project (i.e. planting, composting, cleaning, etc.) If you are interested in more information about this initiative, please contact us at soorgsgu@gmail.com. |

Students for Global Health holds health fairs all over the island throughout the year. It is a great way to get to know the island and the people who live here. Volunteers are always needed, and you do not have to be medically trained. Tasks include registration, body mass index, blood pressure, blood sugar, vision test and a literature table. At each start of a health fair there is on-site training, and you are asked to do only what you feel comfortable and competent doing.
Fairs will provide:
- Basic evaluation for weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, vision, etc.
- Interactive education programs on disease, i.e.; breast health, Diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.
- An educational puppet program will be presented about HIV (always need volunteers for this, this is more teaching from a script)
- Sickle Cell and HIV testing and counseling will also be provided
Buses will leave the Upper True Blue Bus Stop at around 8:00 am and bring the volunteers back to campus at the end of the the health fair. Lunch is provided.
No health fairs are scheduled for 2009. Stay tuned for 2010 fairs. |

You can help Grenadian kids in many ways!
PLAY MONDAYS (starting August 24): Meet at the upper
bus stop on campus at 3:00 p.m. We travel to the home for children and play with the
kids for a while. The driver then picks us up from home around 5:00 p.m.
It’s a short time commitment and means so much to the kids. Please join us!
BEACH SATURDAYS (starting August 22): Visit and play with some
of the kids every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to noon on
SGU Grand Anse Campus in front of "The Ladies" restaurant. The SGU
Orphanage Student Organization (OSO) takes the 9:30 a.m. Grand Anse bus from the True
Blue campus to Grand Anse Campus. This event is organized by OSO, but SOs are welcome. You are invited to bring your
own children to play too! It has been requested that we wear modest swimsuits
when we are around the children, so please keep that in mind. For more
information contact the OSO at oso.sgu@gmail.com.
TUTORING: Tutors are needed for the kids at both Queen
Elizabeth and Bel-Air homes for children. Transportation will be provided from the
upper bus stop on campus. If you would like to dedicate 2 hours a week to
helping these wonderful children with their reading and writing skills as well
as providing them with needed love and attention, please contact us.
DENTIST: Volunteers are needed to go with the kids to the
dentist. We only take a few kids at a time and transportation can be
provided, so it isn’t overwhelming. If you would like to help take the
kids to the dentist, please contact us.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities, specify
how you are interested in helping when you contact us at soorgsgu@gmail.com. |

In Grenada, when a teenage girl becomes pregnant, she is not allowed to complete school. The Program for Adolescent Mothers (PAM) allows these ladies to finish their education and learn how to care for their babies. The Women in Medicine Organization sponsors workshops each year for PAM participants, and the SO Organization assists in these workshops. If you are interested in helping with this program, please contact us at soorgsgu@gmail.com. | |
