Support Services:
Special Populations also supports students with documented disabilities.  If you have a disability, you may benefit from services such as tutoring, testing accommodations, adaptive equipment, assistive technology, advocacy, problem resolution and referrals to community agencies.  To receive these services students should contact a Special Populations advisor, schedule an appointment and provide current documentation of need or disability.  These services are provided through financial support from the Carl D. Perkins Grant and Southwestern Michigan College under the direction of Dr. Margaret Hay, Dean of Students and Academic Support.

Available Services and Support:

Counseling - Counseling or activities that promote the mental, physical, social and emotional well being. Referrals will be made to appropriate community services if necessary.

Academic Advising - Assistance in the development of career awareness, planning, decision-making, placement skills and knowledge, as well as understanding of occupational, educational and labor market needs, trends and opportunities. Assistance is also available in identifying planning and attaining educational goals which are consistent with aptitudes, needs, abilities and interests.

Tutoring - Learning assistance provided by persons or students who have exhibited competence in the specified area in which they are assisting students. This may be provided in small groups, individual tutoring, workshops and/or seminars.

Developmental Instruction - SMC provides developmental classes to assist under prepared college students to succeed in college level courses.

Communication Services for the Hearing Impaired - Services of an individual who serves as a communication facilitator between the hearing-impaired student and hearing persons.

Note taking - A student who takes notes in the classroom using specialized notebooks, and provides a copy to the student with disabilities at the conclusion of the class.

Read Aloud or Adaptive Textbook - Textbooks in adaptive format (electronic/e-text used with Read Aloud software or books on tape) are made available upon request for student whose ability to read if impaired by a specific disability.

Writer/Scribe - A student or instructional aide is provided to write any instructional related material and or responses for tests for students who are physically impaired, visually impaired or learning disabled whose disability prevents them from successfully completing their coursework without this special component.

Instructional Aide - A student or other person who provides individualized assistance to physically impaired students in order to allow access to classroom instruction.

Assistive Technology or Specialized or Adaptive Instructional Equipment - Equipment or adaptive software is provided for a student with a disability that allows for equal access to classroom instruction.

Tape Recorder - Student with a documented disability may be provided a tape recorder to tape classroom instruction or to use as an adaptive learning tool.

Learning Station Modification - SMC will provide equipment or adaptations in order to make learning stations more accessible to students with disabilities.

Testing Accommodations - A Special Populations advisor will make recommendations for specific test accommodations based on the professional documentation of a student’s disability. These might include additional time on tests, test taking in another setting, tests read to student or a scribe provide to write answers for student.

Specialized Occupational Tools - SMC will provide specific adaptive equipment or instruments if required, in order to allow students with disabilities to participate in regular programs to the extent possible.
