Prophet Mohamed and Aisha listened to singers with musical instruments in their house. Prophet Mohamed said prophets before him used musical instruments. Prophet Mohamed rejected the idea that musical instruments are a tool of the Devil. Prophet Mohamed said that a singer had received a double reward in the hereafter. Prophet Mohamed told Abu Musa that the musical instruments that were given to him was something wonderful not something evil.

Sport
in Islam: see
comment 32 and 40. The other comments
about music and musical instruments also apply to Sport.
Music,
song, musical instruments and sports are not prohibited, not haram, not forbidden in
Islam in English.
Is song, music and musical instruments and sports legal,
allowed, prohibited, haram, haraam, forbidden in Islam?
Music is legal in Islam.
Singing is legal in Islam.
Musical instruments are legal in Islam.
There is
nothing from God in the Quran that prohibits Song and Music and Musical
instruments but there are many warnings from God in the Quran about people
that say
God prohibited things that God did not prohibit.
1. Quran 6:87, Quran 16:116, Quran 16:117 God does not allow man to prohibit
what God has not prohibited in the Quran. Quran
5:87, Verse 5:87
O you who have faith (in God), do not forbid the good things that God has
made lawful for you and do not break the law. God does not love law breakers. Quran 16:116, Verse 16:116 And do not say falsely with your own tongues, "This
is lawful (allowed) and this is unlawful (forbidden)," so that you invent
a lie against God (by saying something that God did not say). Those who invent
a lie against God shall not succeed (in the Hereafter).
Quran 16:117, Verse 16:117 (For those that claim that God said something that God
did not say there is) a brief
enjoyment (in life) but for them shall be a painful punishment (in the
Hereafter).
2. God asks mankind 31 times
in Quran chapter 55, “From
everything that God has provided to you which of them do you deny?” (What
do you say is not from God? or What do you say God has prohibited to you
when in fact it is not prohibited to you by God?).
Quran 55:13, Quran 55:16, Quran 55:18, Quran 55:21, Quran 55:23, Quran 55:25, Quran 55:28,
Quran 55:30, Quran 55:32, Quran 55:34, Quran 55:36, Quran 55:38, Quran 55:40, Quran 55:42,
Quran 55:45, Quran 55:47, Quran 55:49, Quran 55:51, Quran 55:53, Quran 55:55, Quran 55:57,
Quran 55:59, Quran 55:61, Quran 55:63, Quran 55:65, Quran 55:67, Quran 55:69, Quran 55:71,
Quran 55:73, Quran 55:75, Quran 55:77 Which of the bounties of your Lord will
you deny (meaning, which of all the things that God gives you will you deny
by saying they did not come from God or by saying that God has prohibited
things to you that God has not prohibited to you)?
3. Quran 6:21 from God about man inventing prohibitions
and then saying that the prohibition is from God.
Quran 6:21, Verse 6:21 And who commits a
greater sin than he who invents a lie against God (by saying that God
ordered things that He did not order) or denies His revelations? Those
wrongdoers shall not be successful (in the hereafter).
4. Quran 6:140 from God about those that
prohibit what God has given to mankind.
Quran 6:140, Verse 6:140 Lost
(from the love of God are those) who have killed their children (by burying
their children alive) in foolishness without sense (because of their false
belief in stone idols) and (those who) have prohibited what (food) God has
provided them by inventing a lie against God (by saying God prohibited
things that He did not prohibit). They have gone astray and are not
(rightly) guided (by God).
5. Quran 6:144 from God about those that
have no evidence from God’s Quran for what they say is prohibited by God.
Quran 6:144, Verse 6:144 And consider a
pair of camels and a pair of oxen. Say, “Has He (God) forbidden the two
males or the two females and what is in the wombs of the two females or
were you a witness when God ordered this for you (that you use it to
support your claim that such laws exist)? Then who does the greatest wrong
than he who fabricates a lie concerning God (by saying that God ordered
something that he did not order) so that he may lead mankind astray without
knowledge. Surely God does not (rightly) guide the people that do wrong.
6. Quran 5:101
from God about asking questions about things that are not in the Quran. Quran
5:101, Verse 5:101 O you who have faith (in God), do not ask about
things that if they were made known they might be a burden to you. But if
you ask questions when the Quran is being revealed then they shall be
answered. God gives his pardon for (those that did) this. God is forgiving
and tolerant.
7. Quran 5:101
from God about people that prohibit things for themselves and later other
people say it was God that prohibited it. Quran 3:93, Verse 3:93 (Despite
what some of the Jews of Medina said, in fact) all food was lawful to the
Children of Israel, except what Israel (Prophet Jacob, Yaqub, Yaqoob,
Yaqob, Yaakov, Israel) made unlawful for himself before the Torah was
revealed. Say (O Mohamed, to them), "Bring the Torah here and recite
it (to us) if you are truthful."
(Comment1. Quran 3:93 makes clear that no food was prohibited by God in the time
of Abraham (Ibrahim, Ibraham, Ibraheem, Ebrahim, Abraham, Avraham) and that it was Prophet Jacob (Yaqub,
Yaqoob, Yaqob, Yaakov, Israel) who
prohibited food for himself).
(Comment 2. This is confirmed in the
Jewish Torah of the Old Bible in Genesis 32:26 – 32:33).
8. Quran 3:94
from God about those that continue to say that something that God did not
prohibit in God’s Quran, is prohibited. Quran 3:94, Verse 3:94 If anyone
after this (time when the truth has been revealed) invents a lie (regarding
when and why certain foods were prohibited) and attributes it to God then
they are truly wicked.
9. The
Holy book of Allah (God) is the Quran.
Shortly before his death Prophet Mohamed,
messenger of Allah (God), said “I have perfected (completed) Islam as your
religion.”
The Quran is the gift of knowledge and the
commandments for this life and the path to success in the hereafter.
The Quran is written for the eyes of all
mankind and womankind.
10. Where is music banned
(made forbidden, prohibited by God) in the perfected (completed) Quran?
The Quran says
nothing about Music, songs and musical instruments.
11. The
Quran warns against extreme ideas.
The
Quran repeats 31 times one question in Quran chapter 55: “Which of the
blessings of the Lord do you deny?” so as to warn us against extreme ideas
that come from man and not from the orders of God in the Quran.
12. Musical instruments near Prophet Mohamed.
In
Bukhari, Book 15, Hadith 70 Prophet Mohamed warned people against extremism
(extreme ideas) especially regarding music, singing, songs and musical
instruments because Islam is a religion of moderation (moderate ideas as
ordered by God).
In Bukhari, Book 15,
Hadith 70 as narrated by Aisha (the wife of Prophet Mohamed) “…….when Abu
Bakr came and spoke to me (Aisha, the wife of Prophet Mohamed) harshly
saying, "musical instruments of Satan near
the Prophet?" Prophet Mohamed turned his face towards him (Abu Bakr)
and said (to Abu Bakr), "Leave them alone."…….”
Moderation is what God
has ordered for the religion of submission to God (Islam).
Extremism (extreme ideas) is the doing of
things that God (Allah) has not ordered.
The Quran warns
mankind not to prohibit what God has not prohibited.
The
Quran repeats 31 times one question in Quran chapter 55: “Which of the blessings
of the Lord do you deny?” so as to warn us against extreme ideas that come
from man and not from the orders of God in the Quran.
13. Prophet Mohamed showed that songs, music and musical
instruments are among the blessings of God. Bukhari, Book 15,
Hadith 70 is narrated by Aisha (the wife of Prophet Mohamed) that, “Prophet
Mohamed came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs
of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the
Khazraj and the Aus, before the time of Islam). Prophet Mohamed lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me (Aisha, the wife of Prophet Mohamed) harshly saying, "musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet?" Prophet Mohamed turned his face towards him (Abu Bakr) and said (to Abu Bakr), "Leave them alone."
Comment. In the house
were singers, musical instruments, Prophet Mohamed, Prophet Mohamed’s wife
and 2 girl entertainers singing and playing musical instruments. The prophet and his
wife are relaxing and listening to the music and the songs from the times
before Islam. Prophet Mohamed was lying
down on the bed or on the floor. Abu Bakr (Prophet
Mohamed’s relative) walked in saying, "musical
instruments of Satan near the Prophet?" Prophet Mohamed teaches Abu
Bakr that it is an extreme idea to connect musical instruments with Satin by
telling Abu Bakr to "Leave them alone." (Meaning, "Leave the
people that are singing and playing musical instruments alone." Meaning,
"Let the people that are singing and playing musical instruments continue
singing and playing their musical instruments").
14. God (Allah) wants man and
woman to enjoy all the blessings that God has provided.
That is why God (Allah) asks us 31 times:
"Which of the blessings of the Lord (Allah, God) do you deny?"
God (Allah) tells us not to deny his
blessings.
God (Allah) in the completed perfected Quran
does not say that music, songs or musical instruments is prohibited.
15. Who will deny that
music, songs or musical instruments are among the blessings of God?
Prophet Mohamed in his
conversation with Abu Bakr teaches Muslims that to say music, songs,
singers, entertainers and musical instruments is not allowed is an extreme view
in Islam, the wrong path in Islam and is not the order of God or of Prophet
Mohamed.
Prophet Mohamed in his
conversation with Abu Bakr teaches Muslims that to say music, songs,
singers, entertainers and musical instruments is a tool of Satin is an extreme
view in Islam, the wrong path in Islam and is not the order of God or of
Prophet Mohamed.
Prophet Mohamed in his
conversation with Abu Bakr teaches Muslims that to say music, songs,
singers, entertainers and musical instruments is a tool of the Devil is an
extreme view in Islam, the wrong path in Islam and is not the order of God
or of Prophet Mohamed. Moderation is what God
has ordered for the religion of submission to God (Islam). Extremism (extreme
ideas) is the doing of things that God (Allah) has not ordered.
16. Some people at the
time of Prophet Mohamed like some people today felt that denying something
to themselves and also denying it to other people was a sign of
righteousness.
The Quran said that is
not correct.
The Quran in chapter
55 says 31 times that the righteous people do not deny for themselves or
for others that which God has blessed for them.
Prophet Mohamed was
teaching the first Muslims in Islam the way of worship, belief and
behaviour and in Bukhari, Book 15, Hadith 70, we learn how the first
Muslims in Islam unnecessarily denied for themselves God’s blessings and they also
denied the rights of other people to accept God’s blessings (Abu Bakr denied
himself musical instruments and then put his belief in harsh words on other
people such as Aisha the wife of Prophet Mohamed).
Abu Bakr was corrected
by Prophet Mohamed who said “leave them alone (the singers and the players
of musical instruments and allow them to continue the entertainment).”
1400 years later we
today are thankful to God (praise Him) who has shown us through Prophet
Mohamed (bless him) and Abu Bakr (bless him) and the examples of other
Muslims of the past and present (bless all the rightly guided) about how
they were taught to follow the correct guidance of God.
17. The Quran tells us not to deny God’s blessings.
The moderate view in Islam promoted by God
(Allah) in the Quran is that our life is balanced by the duty to worship
the creator (Allah, God) and our responsibility for our parents, family and
children and the laws of the creator which include the welfare of the
environment and not to deny the blessings (of our soul, mind, body,
relationships, knowledge and creativity) that has been given to us by
Allah, God.
18. Like every blessing given
by Allah (God), music, songs and musical instruments must be enjoyed with
moderation.
Moderation means that music is balanced by the
duty to worship the creator (Allah, God), show responsibility for our
family and follow the laws of the creator.
Every allowable action and deed including good
music and songs are a blessing from the Lord (Allah, God) just as good and
kind talk is a blessing from the Lord (Allah, God).
19. Music or Songs with bad
words or bad behaviour is to be avoided just as bad and unkind talk with
bad behavior is to be avoided.
Every Muslim country including Saudi Arabia,
the home of Prophet Mohamed and the largest Muslim nation Indonesia all
broadcast music on radio and TV.
20. The Quran does not prohibit music. It is not allowed to prohibit (make illegal, make forbidden) that which is not prohibited by Allah (God) in the completed perfected Quran.
21. The Quran does
prohibit Muslims from killing each other. To understand better here is an imaginary
conversation but remember only God really knows the future. Those who say
music is prohibited (illegal, forbidden) “might” be asked in the hereafter
(Judgment Day), “Why in your time did you not stop Muslim killing Muslim
which is clearly prohibited by Allah (God) in the Quran instead of telling
people that music was prohibited when there is no such prohibition in the
completed and perfected Quran?”
May Allah (God) forgive my errors and that
which I do not see or understand.
Comments
from readers.
22. Ibrahim from Kuwait asks for a comment on
the following Hadith (story from early Islam):
Sahih
Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v, narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik
Al-Ash'ari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers
there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the
wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical
instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the
side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with
their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return
to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the
mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys
and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."
And Allah knows best.
Reply
from Sam:
Thank you Ibrahim, see 23 to 38 below.
23. The
interpretation of all Hadith must be in agreement with the word of Allah
(God).
In Sahih
Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v where people will consider
illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic
drinks and the use of musical instruments as lawful describes people that
are having an orgy of sin. An orgy is supported by sexual intercourse, the
wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and music (musical
instruments) all happening at the same time.
Some
take Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v to mean that musical
instruments are illegal but Bukhari, Book 15, Hadith 70 shows that is not
true because Prophet Mohamed stopped Abu Bakr from calling musical
instruments a tool of Satin when Prophet Mohamed was in the house of his
wife Aisha when they were both listening to entertainers that were with
them singing and playing musical instruments in their house.
What
is the real meaning of musical instruments being unlawful in the Hadith
(story from early Islam) Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v
if Prophet Mohamed and his wife were happy to have people with musical
instruments sing and entertaining them in their house as described in Sahih
Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v?
24. The
meaning of the story from early Islam (hadith) Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7,
Book 69, Number 494v.
The
meaning of the story when both Hadith are considered is that you are free
to enjoy the blessings from God but if you do something that is forbidden
like illegal sexual intercourse, the
wearing of silk by men and the drinking of alcoholic drinks then not only
are those things illegal (as ruled in the Quran) but every other thing (in
the Quran or not in the Quran) that is part of that illegal activity also
becomes illegal such as, for example musical
instruments. But not only musical
instruments, everything involved in that activity is illegal.
25. The
central message in Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v is that
anything supporting an illegal act becomes itself illegal in Islam.
The central
message of Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v is that when
someone does something illegal (anything illegal) they are really saying
that illegal behavior and illegal action is legal for him or her.
For
example, when one Muslim kills another Muslim he or she is saying this
action is lawful (legal) for me to do.
During
such killing everything that leads to it (the use of technology to promote
killing people, behaviours to kill people, thoughts to kill people,
motivations to kill people and actions to kill people) all become illegal.
For
example, using telephone devices which are normally legal becomes illegal when
used to kill people or for planning to kill people.
Speech
that is normally legal becomes illegal when a voice is used in talking
about the killing of people or in planning to kill people.
Computers
that are normally legal become illegal to use when used to promote the killing
of people or in planning to kill people.
26. Musical
instruments are the same as telephones, computers, the human voice and the
human mind.
Musical
instruments, music and song themselves are not evil and are not illegal in
Islam but they become illegal if they are used with illegal sexual
intercourse, the wearing of silk by men and the drinking of alcoholic
drinks or in promoting the killing of people or when used in any illegal
activity.
27. Legal
musical instruments, telephones and computers in Islam.
The
use of the telephone, the human voice, the computer, the human mind, music,
song, and musical instruments are all legal when used for good and illegal
when used for bad.
28. Hadith
(stories from early Islam) must be explained so they agree with the Quran.
When
the Hadith of Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v is explained
with insight and understanding it is a powerful warning to help people understand
that people who consider Muslim killing Muslim as lawful are incorrect.
The
Hadith of Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v cannot be used
to ban music in Islam because no such ban exists in the Quran and we have
seen in Bukhari, Book 15, Hadith 70 that Prophet Mohamed did not ban
musical instruments, songs, singers, and entertainers from the house of his
wife Aisha.
If the creator made
music (musical instruments) illegal for all time then every person can read
that order in the Quran.
The Quran confirms
that sexual intercourse outside marriage, the wearing of silk by men and the
drinking of alcoholic drinks are all illegal.
The
Quran does not confirm that music (musical instruments) is illegal.
Instead
the Quran says "Which of the many bounties of the Lord do you
deny?" and "Don’t make illegal that which the Lord has not made illegal
(in the Quran)".
The
Hadiths are an important treasurer but they are man made and cannot
overrule the Quran which is God’s (Allah's) word.
Whenever
there is conflict you must follow the Quran because on the Day of Judgment
(remembering that only God knows the real future) you “might” be asked why
did you follow what one man said to another (in a Hadith) when you were
told by Prophet Mohamed that the Quran is Allah’s complete and perfected
word and God sent a clear warning that was repeated 31 times in Quran
chapter 55 for those whom God willed to see, “Which of the bounties of your Lord will you
deny (meaning, which of all the things that God gives you will you deny by
saying they did not come from God or by saying that God has prohibited
things to you that God has not prohibited to you)?”
29. The
Quran is the light that removes any doubt.
Hadith
are a man made treasurer because the collected wisdom of Hadith interpreted
in the light of the Quran increases our understanding of practical matters
and decisions that allow us to consider the wide range of interpretations.
Today
everyone can read the accumulated knowledge of Hadith and Quran and Allah
guides each person as he wills.
30. Is the interpretation
correct that songs are sometimes good and sometimes bad just as talk is sometimes
good and sometimes bad?
31. Prophet
Mohamed showed there is bad song and bad talk and one is not worst than the
other.
In Sahih Muslim, Book 33, Hadith 6422,
Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of God said that, God fixed the
portion of adultery which a man will indulge in and there is no escape from
it. The adultery of the eye is the lustful look and the adultery of the
ears is listening to voluptuous (sensual pleasure from song or talk) and the adultery of
the tongue is licentious speech and the adultery of the hand is the lustful
grip (embrace) and the adultery of the feet is to walk (to the place) where
he intends to commit adultery and the heart yearns and desires which he may
or may not put into effect.
Comment 1. This Hadith (story from early
Islam) shows that Prophet Mohamed considered that
both song and talk to be equally capable of both good and bad.
Comment 2. Since
song and talk is equally capable of both good and bad this supports the
earlier interpretation of Sahih Al-Bukhari,
Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v, where sometimes
musical instruments are illegal such as when they are used in illegal activities
such as an orgy (that involves illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk by men,
the drinking of alcoholic drinks) however in legal and
appropriate situations musical instruments, song and music are legal.
32. Prophet Mohamed showed by his action and by his words that singing, music, musical instruments and sports are not prohibited in Islam. Watching sports in Islam. Listening to sports in Islam. Playing sports in Islam. Prophet Mohamed listened to music and song and sports. Music, songs and musical instruments in the home of the wife of Prophet Mohamed. Bukhari, Book 15, Hadith 70 is narrated by Aisha (the wife of Prophet Mohamed) who said that, “Prophet Mohamed came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Aus, before the time of Islam). Prophet Mohamed lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me (Aisha, the wife of Prophet Mohamed) harshly saying, "musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet?" Prophet Mohamed turned his face towards him (Abu Bakr) and said (to Abu Bakr), "Leave them (alone)." When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I (Aisha, the wife of Prophet Mohamed) signaled to those girls to go out and they left. It was the day of 'Id, and the Black people were playing with shields and spears; so either I (Aisha) requested the Prophet Mohamed or he (Prophet Mohamed) asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied “Yes”. Then Prophet Mohamed made me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, "Carry on! O Bani Arfida," until I got tired. Prophet Mohamed asked me, "Are you satisfied (Is that sufficient for you)?" I replied “Yes” and he told me to leave.
Comment.
In Bukhari, Book 15, Hadith
70, the
singing with musical instruments was in the house of Aisha, the wife of Prophet Mohamed. Aisha enjoyed listening
to singing and music with Prophet Mohamed. Prophet Mohamed
enjoyed listening to singing and music with Aisha. Prophet Mohamed was
laying down resting and listening to the singing and music as
entertainment. Prophet Mohamed and
Aisha listened to songs about the days before Islam. “Prophet Mohamed lay
down and turned his face to the other side.” This is exactly the same thing
that listeners to music and song do today when they are resting in bed
listening to music and song on the radio.
33. Musical instruments are not the
tool of Satin. Musical instruments are not the
tool of the Devil. Prophet Mohamed showed
that musical instruments are
not the tool of Satin. Prophet Mohamed showed
that musical instruments are
not the tool of the Devil. Prophet Mohamed showed
that musical instruments are
a tool of mankind. In Bukhari, Book 15,
Hadith 70, when musical instruments were described
as the tool of Satin, Prophet Mohamed rejected this idea and ordered the
singers and the music to continue. Prophet Mohamed did not believe
that singing, music or musical instruments where a tool of Satin. To call singing, music or musical
instruments tools of the devil is extreme and Prophet Mohamed did not
believe such extreme ideas because Islam is a religion of moderation.
34. Moderate ideas and
extreme ideas in the time of Prophet Mohamed and the same ideas today. In Bukhari, Book 15,
Hadith 70, the Hadith (story
from early Islam) shows that from the time of Prophet Mohamed until today there
are those that understand Islam as the religion of moderation as shown by
Prophet Mohamed and others who have extreme ideas that are different to the
belief of Prophet Mohamed.
Prophet Mohamed was sent to teach
and show the first Muslims of Islam the correct way to think and behave.
We must be thankful that today we
have collected 1400 years of history to study and use to understand the
correct path to God thanks to the examples of those of the past and the
wisdom that God gives to us today (God willing).
God guides who are the people with
the moderate ideas that are like Prophet Mohamed and who are the people
with different ideas to those of Prophet Mohamed.
If you discover you have been
misguided then you know that God has shown you His mercy by giving you His
(God’s) guidance to the right path, God willing.
35. Are there other Hadith that do not relate to festivals to
show any change to the attitude of Prophet Mohamed to music, singing songs
and musical instruments?
36. Prophet Mohamed recognised that musical instruments were used by the prophets of God before him. Prophet Mohamed expressed high respect for musical instruments. Bukhari, Book 61,
Hadith 568, is narrated by Abu Musa, that Prophet Mohamed said to him' "O Abu Musa,
You have been given one of the musical
wind-instruments of the family of David.”
Comment
1. Bukhari, Book 61,
Hadith 568, is a statement of respect for musical instruments spoken by Prophet Mohamed
because Prophet Mohamed recognised those musical instruments as the same
type of musical instruments that were played by the family of David (Prophet
David, Dawud, Dawood, Dawid, King David, David Hamelech, the second king of
Israel).
Comment
2. Prophet Mohamed confirmed that Prophets
played musical instruments before him.
Comment
3. Prophets of God do not use tools of Satin and this confirms what Prophet Mohamed said in Bukhari,
Book 15, Hadith 70, the Hadith (story from early Islam) where
Prophet Mohamed rejected the idea that musical instruments are a tool of
Satin.
Comment 4. When Satin whispers
into the heart, only those that God does not guide shall listen to Satin.
Musical instruments have nothing to do with the powers of Satin because
only God decides who shall be among the guided and who shall be among the
misguided.
Comment 5. Musical instruments are
a tool of the Prophets of God and of mankind as a blessing from God to man
and women.
Comment 6. Prophet Mohamed is
telling Abu
Musa that the musical
instruments that were given to him was something wonderful not something
evil.
37. Prophet Mohamed enjoyed listening to a singer of songs. The people loved the singing so much that they asked Prophet Mohamed if the singer could keep singing longer. Prophet Mohamed said about a singer of songs, "May God bestow His Mercy on him." Prophet Mohamed said about a singer of songs, the singer “gets double reward in the hereafter because he obeyed in the way of God.” Bukhari, Book 83,
Hadith 29, is narrated by Salama that, We went out with Prophet Mohamed to Khaibar. A
man (from the companions) said, "O 'Amir, Let us hear some of your
Huda (camel-driving songs.)" So
he sang some of them (as a lyric in harmony with the camels walk). Prophet Mohamed said, "Who
is the driver (of these camels)?" They
said, "Amir." Prophet Mohamed said,
"May Allah bestow His Mercy on him." The
people said, "O Prophet of God, Could you let us enjoy his company
longer." Then
'Amir was killed the following morning. The
people said, "The good deeds of 'Amir are lost as he has killed
himself." I
returned at the time while they were talking about that. I
went to Prophet Mohamed and said,
"O God's Prophet, Let my father be sacrificed for you. The people
claim that 'Amir's good deeds are lost." Prophet Mohamed said,
"Whoever says so is a liar, for 'Amir will have a double reward as he
exerted himself to obey God and fought in God's cause. No other way of
killing would have granted him greater reward."
38. Listening to singing was something normal in the life of
Prophet Mohamed. In
Sahih Muslim, Book 30, Hadith 5743, Anas reported that Prophet Mohamed had in one of his journeys
his black slave who was called Anjasha along with him. He goaded by singing
the songs of the camel-driver.
Thereupon Prophet Mohamed said,
Anjasha, drive slowly as you are driving (the mounts that are carrying)
glass vessels.
39. Those that say God forbids
music in Islam when God has made no such prohibition in God’s Quran.
Music would not be allowed at the
time of Muslim festivals if music was evil or if God prohibited music.
Hadith (Stories from early Islam,
discussed earlier) tell us of Prophet Mohamed and Aisha listening to singers
using musical instruments in Aisha’s house during a Muslim festival).
The lawful in Islam and the unlawful in Islam.
(Interpretations to assist in understanding is contained within brackets).
Quran 7:32, Verse 7:32 Say
(to mankind), “Who has forbidden the adornments (things of beauty) of God which
He has created for His servants (mankind) and the good things that He (God)
provides (for mankind to see, to hear, to think, to feel, to eat)?” Say, “These
(good things from God to mankind) are for the believers in the life of this
world and exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection. We explain Our
revelations for people who have understanding (because they are the people that
shall profit in this life and in the hereafter from this knowledge).”
Quran 7:33, Verse 7:33 Say (to mankind), “Our Lord has only
forbidden (things like) indecencies such as (indecencies) that can be seen (in
public) or (indecencies) that are hidden, and sin (that comes from disobedience
to God and unjust oppression (to God’s creations, men, women and
children), and that which you associate with God (when you pray to
something or someone instead of praying only to God) because no authority
has been revealed (to pray to anyone except God, your creator), and to say
about God things that you do not know (such as God prohibited this or
that when you do not know).
What is the greatest sin against God in Islam?
Quran 6:21, Verse 6:21 And
who commits a greater sin than he who invents a lie against God (by saying that
God ordered things that He did not order such as you can pray to anyone when in
fact only God has the power to hear prayer) or denies His revelations (by
saying that God ordered things that God did not order in what God has described
as His completed and protected Quran)? Those wrongdoers shall not be successful
(in the hereafter). Quran 10:59 Verse 10:59 Say,
"Did you think about how God sends down to you all kinds of provisions (everything
that exists) and then you make some of them unlawful, and some lawful?"
Say, "Did God give you permission to do this? Or, do you invent lies and
then say it is an order from God?"
Quran 10:60 Verse 10:60 And those who invent a lie concerning God
what do they think will be their situation on the Day of Resurrection? God
truly sends all Bounty (everything that exists) to mankind, but most of them
(mankind) give no thanks (to God).
40. Those that say God
forbids watching sport in Islam or playing sport in Islam when God has made no
such prohibition in God’s Quran.
Sport would not be allowed at the
time of Muslim festivals if sport was evil or if God (Allah) prohibited sport.
Hadith (Stories from early Islam)
tell us that Prophet Muhammad and Aisha specially left their home to go to watch
a sports game during a Muslim festival and Prophet Muhammad cheered "Carry on! O
Bani Arfida" urging the African sport players to
continue their traditional sports games. (See comment 32 above).
In Bukhari, Book 55,
Hadith 592 Narrated by Salama bin Al-Akwa that, Prophet Mohamed passed
by some people from the tribe of Aslam practicing archery (throwing arrows) and
Prophet Mohamed said, "O offspring of Ishmael (Ismael, Ismail, Isma'il, Yismael), practice archery (throwing arrows) as your father
was a great archer (arrow-thrower). I am with (on the side of) the son of so
and so." Hearing that, one of the two teams stopped throwing. Prophet Mohamed
asked them, “Why are you not throwing?" They replied, "O messenger of
God, How shall we throw when you are with (supporting) the opposite team?"
Prophet Mohamed said, "Throw, I am with all of you."
The other comments about music and musical
instruments also apply to Sport.
