Standard Chartered Plc to invest in renewable energy projects
in Asia worth over $800 million.

"We provide debt, advisory and equity across the sector," Brad Sterley,
director of the bank's renewable energy and environmental finance team

The projects include a solar manufacturing venture in China worth up to $500 million and a $300 million
geothermal energy project in Indonesia. "We see some opportunities in wind, solar and water,"
Sterley said the bank also planned to invest in a solid waste-to-energy project
in China and a wind and a solar power venture in India.

$10bn pledged for Cleantech 2007
The projects are on top of financing worth up to $10 billion for clean technology
which the bank plans to mobilize under its commitment with the Clinton Global Initiative in 2007.

The bank has so far tapped half of the committed financing, but is targeting putting all the funding
to work in markets including Asia, Africa and the Middle East by 2012.

"We see growing opportunities in waste, and hydropower is another significant subsector,".
He said many of the technologies in the renewable space such as solar thermal could present
growth opportunities going forward as they become more commercialized.

Obama Names 'Smart Grid' Projects

The Obama administration on Tuesday named 100 utility projects that will share $3.4 billion in federal stimulus funding to speed deployment of advanced technology designed to cut energy use and make the electric-power grid more robust.

Touring a field of solar energy panels in west-central Florida, President Barack Obama urged greater use of several technologies, including installing "smart" electric meters in homes, automating utility substations and installing thousands of new digital transformers and grid sensors.

"There's something big happening in America in terms of creating a clean-energy economy,'' Mr. Obama said, although he added there is much more to be done.                                                         ++++++++++++++++++++++++

Among the winners are Baltimore Gas & Electric Co., a unit of Constellation Energy, which will get $200 million it can use in a $451 million program to install 1.1 million digital meters and 400,000 in-home control devices and thermostats. San Diego Gas & Electric Co. will get $28 million to improve communications with the 1.4 million advanced meters it already is installing, part of California's extensive meter upgrade that will be completed in 2012.
