The Wizards Guild All underlined texts are hyperlinks.
The Wizards' Guild is for the more subtle people of the disc. We achieve dominance (without fail) by use of the quickness of our thoughts and the judicious application of some of the myriad spells at our disposal. And, unlike an uncouth barbarian warrior, if the situation demands violence, we don't endanger ourselves by taking part in the fray, we blow the bastards up from a distance.
The path of wizardry is a long one, with many uphill stretches through hostile terrain. A student wizard is hopelessly weak and even by the time you reach fourth level you will still be vastly inferior to a warrior on the same level. But if you have the patience to stick it out, then you will find that, in due course, you will indeed be one of the most powerful people around. As long as you don't go PK anyway, but that is another story. PK wizards can be extremely effective, but it requires a different attitude.
The most appealing thing about being a wizard is the sheer variety in what we can accomplish. We have a number of effective shield spells and a large number of interesting ways to blow up our enemies of course. But we also have a myriad of miscellanious spells of various sorts. Some being just toys and others having very practially applications. But it does take a lot of patience to master the more potent spells and commands.
If you have the patience; if you apply yourself wholeheartedly to the study of magic, then one day you too will be counted among the great and huge. (UU wizards do like to eat four meat meals a day, each containing enough food to feed several smaller men.)
You begin as a student, with primaries extending to level 50 and beyond level 40 you have the option to join an order. Though it is usually worth the effort to max them all to 50 before graduation.
There are seven+one orders of wizardry in the Unseen University, the premier college of magical art on the Discworld. There are seven+one colours of hedge wizardry for those who disdain politics and prefer to sleep under the stars and talk to trees. Each hedge colour corresponds to a UU order in terms of primaries.
There are also three orders of wizardry in the Djelibeybi Insititute of Illusiory Learning, however, they are not accepting applications at present.
