Battle Axes
Mr Smith
The fire pit, Barbarian Camp, High Ramtops
Language: Morporkian

Smith forges hatchets, one-handed axes and two-handed axes designed for use in war.
His cutters are by no means cheap, expect to pay at least 2 Lancre Soverigns even for the smallest.
One handed and two handed axes both give the specials chop and hack, hatchets only give hack.

These are barbarian axes, rough-forged in a roaring fire and designed for practical use. Do not expect the smooth lines and quality steel of a master swordsmith for you won't get it. What you will get is a damned great axe with which to cut your enemies into small pieces.
The barbaric axe; definitely the choice for the discerning barbarian and anyone else who braves the mountains for that matter.

The handle can be wrapped with leather thonging, white bear fur, black leather, white fox fur, rabbit skin, moose skin, red cloth, wolf skin, deerskin or yeti fur in order to provide a secure grip.
The blade can be made of rock crystal (quartz), black steel, bronze, silver, stone, flint, steel and iron.
The shaft can be tharga beast bone, ice giant bone, any old crap, human bone, rowan wood, birch wood, yeti bone, willow, pine or oak.
The blade needs a counter-balance for an even swing. You can chose from: a bloody great spike, a lump of crystal, a troll's fist, another blade, a human skull, a wolf skull, an ice eagle, a big rock, a sapphire, a dragon and a ruby.

You have a choice of several different weights for the axe; light, medium, heavy, very heavy and bloody heavy.
Of course even a light axe will still have a decent heft to it and the larger axes will of course weigh more.
Stone and silver heads are also 20% heavier than the other choices.
The shaft, wrapping and counter-balance have no effect on the overall weight of the weapon.

Quick note: the counterweights don't all use the same logic, either. The second blade and spike are made of the same material as the primary blade, with the spike adding pierce rounds (but not specials). The ice eagle is always made of silver. Thus, it's important to read the potential description carefully and make sure you're getting what you want.
Note the Second: In case anyone's wondering, "rock crystal" is another term for quartz (you can get the blade made out of it, and one of the possible counterweights is simply a lump of it).

Finally both my hatchet and one hander judge "slightly worse" than a klatchian steel hatchet, exactly the same as each other, and still "excellent" when judged on their own. I don't think this makes them necessarily worse in practice, since they're available in lighter forms for easier use and speed and heavier forms for better skills and higher damage, cue discussion on "what the hell is judge about?"

So far they seem to be a bit better than the best standard axe, but still not as good as the best swords or maces.
Granted they are pretty good for sp.we tm's :D especially using chop on enchanted one handed axe (my baby).

It is quite clear that as with everything, the weight and size of the axe will determine its relative power and your skills will determine how well you can wield it.  Oh and axes with a spike for the counterbalance can deal pierce damage, but no pierce specials.
