 Why Digital Cameras?

Digital cameras are becoming more common since they are now included on most new cell phones.  Digital cameras are a technology that students already know how to use, like to use, and now just need to learn how to use them at school.

How can I use digital cameras in my classroom?

One cool way to incorporate the use of cameras is to tie it into reading and writing.

1. After reading a selection, have students take 1-5 pictures of objects or scenes that they can relate to the reading.  They can then post the images into a PowerPoint to describe the connection.  This helps develop critical thinking skills and takes students beyond the text.

2. Have students use digital images to introduce themselves at the beginning by creating what is called a 12 of 12.  What students do is take pictures of themselves at 12 different times in the day.  This can be at school, after school, or both.  Students then upload to the pictures to a blog (see Blog page to learn more about blogs).  They write 1-3 sentences about what they were doing when the picture was taken and share the blog with the class.  You can take it further and have them share the link with students from other schools, states, or countries and ask them to do the same.  The possibilities are endless.

3. Save time.  Students have used cell phone cameras in my class to take snapshots of notes, diagrams, or assignment lists.  This way, they have accurate information and save time not having to copy.
