The Soho Masses aim to provide a high standard of liturgical music of all types. The Church of The Assumption & St Gregory has a fine historical organ, and with the outstanding services of the Soho Masses Schola and the Soho Masses Consort, the masses' classical tradition is well assured. However, it is also the wish and intention of the organisers and liturgists to provide a wide range of music of all ages and traditions. For this we need musicians! At the moment, some more contemporary music is difficult because of 'throwback' between organ, cantor and congregation. Such music could work much better with guitar, keyboard, woodwind or percussion accompaniment. Hopefully there are members of the Soho Masses community with skills in these areas. Rehearsal space is usually available in the church Hall before Mass. Liturgies are prepared at least one week in advance, so our planning does not leave things to the last minute. We have two guitars which are going unused at present, so if members would like to bring this added value to the Masses, do PLEASE get in touch: info@sohomasses.com or Martin - 020 8986 0807 THE ORGAN
The organ at the Church Of The Assumption & St Gregory was first built by Byfield in 1790. It was enlarged by Lincoln in 1804. It was rebuilt and enlarged by Bishop & Starr in 1859, and rebuilt again by Bishop & Son in 1910. The last rebuild was by Mander in 1960, preserving everything of historical value PEDAL ORGAN GREAT ORGAN SWELL ORGAN CHOIR /SOLO ORGAN Open Wood 16 Dulciana 16 Salicional 8 Clarabella 8 Bourdon 16 Open Diapason 8 Gedeckt 8 Dulciana 8 Principal 8 Rohr Flute 8 Celeste 8 Gemshorn 4 Flute 8 Principal 4 Principal 4 Block Flute 2 Octave 4 Nason Flute 4 Flute 4 Larigot 1⅓ Flute 4 Fifteenth 2 Fifteenth 2 Trumpet 8 Nazard 2⅔ Tierce 1 3/5 Mixture III Swell to Choir Super Octave 2 Mixture III Clarinet 16 Trombone 16 Swell to Great Cornopean 8 Trumpet 8 Swell to Great Octave Tremulant Clarion 4 Swell to Great Sub Octave Octave Great to Pedal Choir to Great Sub Octave Swell to Pedal Unison Off Choir to Pedal
THE SOHO MASSES CONSORT
The Soho Masses Consort is formed mainly of regular members of the congregation attending the Soho masses. We aim to enrich the musical experience during the mass by the provision of instrumental music from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. The members of the Soho Masses Consort play a variety of instruments including recorders, flutes, violin, trumpet, trombone, tuba, clarinet, and of course organ continuo. Examples of our contributions include: Solo sonatas for recorder and continuo by JB Loeillet de Gant; Bach chorales arranged for full recorder consort; French baroque duets by Michel de la Barre and Michel Blavet; and Trio sonatas by Arcangelo Corelli.
We have also collaborated with members of the Soho Masses Schola in a Renaissance bicinium: "O Maria Mater Pia" and we aim to further develop this type of collaboration.
We would be delighted to hear from any other musicians who would be willing to share their instrumental skills with us; additional string players (violin and/or cello) in particular would help us broaden the depth of our repertoire and would greatly enhance the mainly early woodwind base of our our sound. We normally practise in the church before each mass and occasionally have ad hoc practices arranged at weekends. The Soho Masses Consort members are excited about the opportunities the masses afford us to contribute our talents to the glory of God and His church. THE SCHOLA ASSUMPTIONIS The Schola Assumptionis was formed by regular attenders of the Soho masses in response to appeals for a variety of styles of music at the mass. The Schola is dedicated to the music of the polyphonic schools of the Renaissance and plainchant. It is a small vocal ensemble and sings approximately once every two months during mass. 6 December Mass For Four Voices William Byrd "Canite Tuba in Sion" Francisco Guerrero

The Schola welcomes interest from experienced singers of all voices. Some experience of Renaissance polyphony is essential, as is excellent sight reading and the ability to sing with a single voice to a line. If you would like to have further information about the Schola or to arrange for audition, please contact Celia Gardiner via info@sohomasses.com
