Unfortunately the weather was again unkind with rain and a strong southerly wind which was straight at the riders on the final 3 mile leg to the finish. Undaunted, 9 brave souls tackled the course; impressively all riders from round 1 improved on their timings - Craig Little a whopping 2 mins 8 secs off - Ian Sparrow 51 secs - Sam Davis 46 secs and overall race winner Ian Dunn chipped 24 secs off his previous winning time. A big thank you to George and Andy for setting out and dismantling the course in abysmal weather for the last 2 weeks. Lets hope for lighter winds and sunshine in 2 weeks time. Results here. |

Jim Peters again flew the Sodbury flag in a bid to improve his LVRC race sharpness, unforunately after a hard Vets race (Swindon LVRC) on Sunday in which he was placed 5th in his age group and a strong wind on the night he was slightly off his PB time placing 15th overall in 23:29. Lee Aston decided to try his hand after 6 weeks off the bike with pneumonia, with Jim in his sights it was all he could do to reel him in just before the finish line, but he was pleased not all his winter fitness had been lost finishing 4th overall in 22:29. Race winner was Freddie Lewton of Dream Cycling 21:24. |

With a howling South Easterly and heavy showers to contend, 8 soggy and cold riders braved the elements to post some impressive times on the extended course (now 10.1 miles). In flying form Ian Dunn took the honours in 25:01. Severn RC rider Sam Butler posted an impressive time of 27:12 with mud guards in place and Junior SRC rider Noah Godman showed his ever improving form with 27:18. With Round 2 this Wednesday we hope to see more great rides with the prospect of more favourable weather. |

After Jim Peter's barnstorming fastest time last year, four SCS members entered the White Horse this year. The traditional season opener for the club's sportive riders, aka le Tour de Swindon, this is a lovely ride, taking in a flat opening third around the flatlands north of Swindon before entering the hills of the Ridgeway and Lambourn Downs. Broad Town and Hackpen hills are the opening difficulties, but the stings in the tail are the 20% climb at Ramsbury and the timed ascent of Uffington after 135km. Fortunately the weather held off until the middle afternoon, but a strong blustery wind meant slower times than usual.
Sam Davis was fast out of the blocks, determined to break the 5 hour barrier, but lost a bottle soon after the first feed and suffered from dehydration later in the ride. This enabled Martin Howe to pass him and arrive back in 37th place in 4 hours 56, with Sam was close behind in 5:03. Paul Bath rode very consistently to arrive shortly afterwards in 5:19, while George Shaw suffered a puncture and was distanced at 6:04. |

Jim Peters has shown some good early season form in his first couple of 2012 race appearances.
In the opening event of the Severn Road Club's evening 10ml time trial series on 10th April, he gave his new time-trial bike its first competitive outing and stormed around the course in 23mins 39secs, taking 10th place and trimming more than 15 secs off his personal best for the distance. Also riding was Ian Sparrow, a recent new recruit to Sodbury cycle-sport, who was making his first racing appearance in our colours. He recorded a time of 25:47.
The following Sunday, Jim was in action again, on this occasion road racing in the second event in the MSTina South of England veterans series, promoted by the Surrey-based GS Vecchi club using a 10ml circuit at Herriard, near Basingstoke. The race for riders aged between 40-54 covered 5 laps of the course, finishing at the top of the longest climb on the circuit, where Jim was placed 14th overall, and 4th in his 45-49 yrs age category.

The benign weather conditions on Good Friday were, no doubt, a contributory factor in encouraging another mammoth turn-out of more than 470 entrants for the Easter Classic circuit races promoted by the Chippenham and District Whs at the Castle Combe race circuit.
About 150 of these lined up for the 51km B-race for category-3 riders, and in amongst them was Sodbury Cycle-Sport's sole participant, 60 year-old Terry Gradidge, competing in his first race of the 2012 season to assess his form prior to embarking on a programme of road races for veteran riders over the next few months. The race was destined to end in a bunch sprint, with the few attempts to break clear all failing to gain more than a hand-full of seconds advantage over the briskly-moving bunch that averaged over 26mph for the race distance. Terry rode comfortably, using his experience to maintain a position in the front part of the bunch for most of the race, and although not contesting the sprint for victory, was well enough positioned on the run-in to finish in about 20th place. The race was won by Swansea-based Matt Ackland (Urban Cyclery).
The 72km A-race for elite, first and second category riders was won by Simon Holt (Team Raleigh) from more than 100 entrants in what was the largest field ever assembled at this level in the West region. Winner of the 40km C-race (category-4) was Kieron Smith (VC Montpellier).

Another cool but dry Sunday morning, and with the sportive season approaching we decided to head over the bridge to South Wales again. This time we turned left at Chepstow, taking the road to Caerwent before turning north to climb past the Wentwood reservoir - one of the nicest climbs in the area. As the early stiff ramps led into the final climb of 9% average it was good to have the scenery to take out minds off of the pain. Even better, the climb leads to one of the best descents in the area down to Usk with safe speeds in excess of 40 mph.
From Usk we took the main B road back to Chepstow. This takes in a nice steady climb from Llangwm and an equally steady and satisfying descent past Shirenewton. In the end we returned for a distance of a bit over 100km in just over 4 hours.

With the weather remaining hot and calm Lee Aston and Ian Dunn ventured to Castle Combe Circuit for a very well organised traffic free and measured 10mile TT. After riding in a 2up TT together last month it was time to test their individual skills!! 50 riders pitted themselves against the fast but testing course, 5.5 laps using chip timing for splits and accuracy, there could be no hiding!! Ian who admitted to already covering 160 miles this week and then cycling to the event posted a fantastic and ever improving PB time of 22:00 for 5th position overall. Recovering from a virus which has plagued him for the past month, Lee was also very pleased with a time of 22:17 for 6th place. The race winner in a fantastic time of 20:21 was Jeff Jones of Drag2zero. With the TT season now getting started proper and our own 1st race on the 25th April looming, a healthy battle will surely ensue between Lee and Ian.

A bit of a sparse turnout today, due to Mothers Day activities, so we decided to take advantage of the once-more-excellent weather and have a more relaxed social ride. So we ventured south-west down to Easter Compton and Pilning before turning north up the Severn Vale through Olveston, Littleton and up to Berkeley. We then returned through Cromhall and Wickwar and a most enjoyable 70km. |
