The Socorro County Solid Waste department is headed by Director Michael Jojola, who has served the county for over 25 years. The Department maintains transfer stations throughout the County. Each transfer station accepts household waste, which is transfered to the Socorro Landfill. The landfill is operated by the City of of Socorro.

Below is an excerpt from Ordinance 2006-01 explaining who must pay the solid waste fee. For a full copy of the ordinance, please visit or Ordinances page. Payment of the solid waste management fee shall be the obligation of the responsible party for each premises located in the unincorporated area of Socorro County. . . . It is presumed that all residential premises and business premises within the unincorporated portions of the County utilize County refuse disposal sites (including the City of Socorro Landfill). . . payment of the solid waste management fee allows the responsible party to dispose of solid waste in the City of Socorro landfill at no additional cost to the responsible party. If a residence or business does not utilize the County refuse disposal sites (including the City of Socorro Municipal Landfill), then the responsible party may obtain a waiver of the fee pursuant to the terms Section 16 of this Ordinance. If there are multiple premises on a property, such as a duplex, a mobile home park or an apartment complex, the solid waste management fee shall be assessed on each premises.
There are only three ways to waive the fee:
1. If the premises for which the waiver is being sought is at least twenty-five (25) miles from a Socorro County Solid Waste Transfer Station
2. The responsible party disposes of solid waste in accordance with any regulations of the Solid Waste Bureau or the New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission as determined by the New Mexico Environment Department.
3. If the owner or tenant uses the solid waste disposal facilities of another County or Municipality. It is the responsibility of the owner or tenant requesting the waiver to provide proof of the use of other facility by submitting copies or receipts of properly issued permits from the other waste disposal facility along with application for the waiver permit request for approval by the Solid Waste Director. |
