Brian Lisko - President

When my students ask me why I became a teacher I usually joke with them, “So I can go on really cool vacations to exotic locations.” I have been to 17 countries and studied at 3 international universities. With a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Cultural Studies from Goddard College and a Masters Degree in Education and Curriculum Development from the University of Vermont I have worked in the field of education for nine years.  In addition to teaching at Sierra Vista High School and West Prep Academy for the last six years, I have served as a TESL coach, Multicultural Committee member, a Nevada History Day judge, and member of the Technology Task-Force. In addition to teaching in Nevada and Vermont I have also worked for the Prince’s Trust, a youth outreach organization, while living in Scotland.  I also have a 3-year-old son, Reese, and another as of yet unnamed baby boy on the way later this fall.

As an active member of SNCSS for the last four years I have participated in leading several professional development workshops including a presentation at the NCSS Houston, Texas National Convention on Engaging Diverse Learner Through Differentiated On-Line Instruction.  Parts of that presentation were later published in ShopTALK Professional Development Magazine under the title "Using iPods and Cell Phones to Engage Learners?" In 2008, I was also honored to be named SNCSS Teacher of the Year and, most recently, I was awarded the 2010 Korea Society Teaching Fellowship.  My commitment to integrate technology into the social studies curriculum and to engage students in meaningful preparation for civic engagement has propelled my participation in the SNCSS and has led me to be elected President-Elect and then president in 2010.  Through this position I hope to invigorate participation in this organization and implement development opportunities that focus on social studies content.  It has been a pleasure serving as your president for the last year.

Emily Rodriguez - President - Elect & VP Social Activities

I have lived in Las Vegas for 19 years so I remember when Escobedo Middle School was just desert but today that is where I work teaching 8th grade Geography.  This is my 9th year in the school district all of which have been spent in middle school.  I am super involved at Escobedo working on the Leadership Committee, Discipline Committee, Staff Development Committee, SIP Team, advisor for Student Council and I am the resident chaperone for our summer trip to Washington D.C. with 8th graders.  I truly love my job and influencing our future.  I love kids so much that I am even a leader for high school kids at my church, Canyon Ridge.  I am a single mingle but do live with my sister Toni and the cutest girl in the whole wide world my niece Michaela Jade aka MJ.  So I inherited a teenager and baby even though I have no kids of my own.

My goals for SNCSS this year is to distinguish a clear vision for what we want in the future as social studies teachers, increase membership and work to set up a PDE course for our members to meet license requirements.  Plus we have to make sure we still play bar golf, see a baseball game and I would like to see another family friendly event for us to socialize.  Personal goals of mine this year include going to Europe, losing 50 lbs and becoming debt free.  All of which are LOFTY goals but I am not allergic to hard work so I know I can do it.

Just for fun…I love Jesus, pigs, wine, travel & MUSIC.  I hate mushrooms, spitting, wool, cats & “roughing it”.

Krista Boivie - VP Communications/Secretary/Web Master

I currently teach all levels of World History at Southwest Career and Technical Academy.  During my five years in the district I have also enjoyed teaching at Northwest Career and Technical Academy and Durango High School. I have a Bachelor’s of Communication and a MEd from UNLV.  I relish being busy and I work as a trainer for the CPD office with the Social Studies and AVID departments.  In addition, I serve as the advisor to the Talent & Photography Clubs and am a member of the AP Committee at SWCTA.

Last year, I furiously worked on my National Board Teaching Certification and am anxiously waiting to hear about the results this fall. My goals for SNCSS this year are to make all of our members more aware of the upcoming events, update our website and increase membership.  I am excited about this year and can’t wait to meet more of you at our future events.

John Rotatori - VP Membership

I just finished my third year at Western High School and my sixth year in the district.  I have taught U. S. History Honors, U. S. History and World History in the past at Western.  My first three years were spent at J. D. Smith Middle School teaching 8th grade World Geography. I received my Bachelor's of Arts in Communication from Bowling Green State University, my teaching credentials from John Carroll University, & my Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from UNLV.

I also currently serve on the board of the Nevada Council of History Education (NvCHE) and am a member of the National Council for History Education (NCHE), Southern Nevada Living History Association (SNLHA) and WWII California Historical Group (CHG)

I have been a World War II Reenactor since 1997.  I currently have impressions as a German Mountain Trooper, a Russian Soldier and an Italian Bersaglieri. I look forward to meeting you at future SNCSS functions.  I am very excited for this coming school year and if there is anything I can do please do not hesitate to ask.

Cheryl Burton - Treasurer

I have been an educator in Southern Nevada since August of 2005. This is my third year at Nevada Virtual  Academy where I teach US History.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and moved to Las Vegas to begin my career in education. I belong to several Living History groups where I portray 1860’s Union Soldier and 1860’s Civilian as well as a World War II Russian soldier at numerous events in Nevada, Arizona, and California. I have enjoyed my time at NVVA and looks forward to many more years teaching young people in Nevada.
