LAWRENCE SCHOOL’S READING MOTIVATION SUMMER PROGRAM 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We will be continuing our Summer Motivation Program this year by asking you to help your child continue their progress they have made this year as readers.  What can you do?  Simply make reading a priority every day over the summer months.  Please carefully look over the contents of our summer reading envelope that explains our program.

The goals of our program are;

  • To have students be frequent, independent readers at home.
  • To have parents make reading a book part of every summer day.
  • To provide options for activities that anyone can do with their own child at home.
  • To use inspiration as a motivator (That means you, parents! You are the most effective motivator there is.)
  • To focus on student success and accomplishment.
  • To partner with the town library in getting kids involved with summer reading, “Catch the Reading Bug!”
  • To bring summer reading “Back to School” with our students in September, here is a project that is described below.

There are important roles that you will play in making your child become a better reader over the summer.  We encourage you to make time and space for your child to read a book every summer day.  It is an important way in which you can inspire your child to enjoy books even in the summer time.

As a further suggestion, we are asking each student to do a project about a book he or she has read over the summer.  This type of project is called a diorama.  Children can use a shoebox or other type of box, use crayons, colored paper, clay or anything else they can think of to create a visual of a part of a book they have read.  They can decorate the inside of the box to show characters from the book or a scene from the story.  Please make sure your child’s name, the book’s title and your child’s teacher’s name are written somewhere on the box.  I will ask the children to bring the dioramas to school on the morning of Back to School Night in September.  All dioramas will be on display for families to enjoy.  This is an optional activity, but your child’s participation will send critical messages to him or her –that his efforts are valuable, that she can take pride in accomplishment, that reading in the summer can be fun, that our school congratulates those reading efforts and that your family knows that summer reading is important.

So…

  • Set aside time and space for your child to read every day.
  • Make summer reading a habit.
  • Use lots of suggested ways to encourage reading.
  • Inspire your child with the value and fun of reading.
  • Participate in the diorama project.

Your commitment and efforts will make all the difference in the world with your child!  We are counting on you!

Sincerely,

Barbara Cimorelli, Principal

Did you work on your diorama today?

1.  Get a shoebox, or other small box.

2.  Decorate the inside of the box to show the characters and setting from a book you have read.

3.  Use crayons, colored paper, clay or anything else you can think of.

4.  Please make sure your name, the book’s title and your new teacher’s name are written somewhere on the box.

5.  Bring it to school on the morning of Back to School Night in September.  All dioramas will be on display for your families to enjoy.  I can’t wait to see your diorama!
