Student Leadership

There are lots of great ways to get involved in the Campus Ministry at St. Monica-St. George:

Student Interns
The internship program involves students in a more deliberate way in campus and parish ministry. Four or five students each year are selected to live in a house with the Friars, who have their separate living space. There is some shared prayer, meals and common life. Interns are responsible for food and personal expenses, but their housing costs are provided by the program. In turn, they are required to work ten hours per week in campus or parish ministry and participate in supervisory sessions. Applications are taken in the winter for the following academic year.  To learn more about our internship program, click here.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM
Our Student Leadership Team are the people that make all what we do happen by serving the needs of our Catholic community.  These dedicated students work with our campus ministers and pastoral staff on a wide range of programs: from retreats to small faith sharing, from service to providing religious education for the children of the parish.  Our leadership team is further divided into three smaller teams each focusing on a different need of our community, but all come together as servants of our parish life.

Community Team
The Community Team focuses on ministering to the students who are a part of the Newman Center community.  They focus on social events and other programs to build community among members of the Newman Center as well as spiritual events to deepen the spirituality of the members of the Newman Center.

I was born in Cincinnati and went to Catholic grade school and then McAuley a Catholic High School. I am an only child and am 19 years old and will be 20 in March. I love Graeters Ice Cream as well as Skyline Chili and I can wiggle my ears! I now go to the University of Cincinnati in the college of Allied Health Sciences to study Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) more commonly known as speech therapy. I am looking foward to another good year at St. Monica St. George!

Emily Hautman

Hello, everyone! My name is Emily Hautman, I'm a second year Neuroscience/Pre-Medicine major, and I'm on the Community Team. Besides being involved at St. MoGo, I am a member of Navigators, Caducea (the pre-med society), University Honors Association, and am working to start a new club this year called Knit for the Needy (you should join!). When I'm not at school, chances are high that you will find me at Cincinnati Children's Hospital where I work in a research lab. I've lived in Cincinnati all my life, went to Mother of Mercy High school in Westwood, and my parish at home is Our Lady of Lourdes. I could live on strawberry banana yogurt and chicken tenders (though not necessarily together) and my favorite colors are yellow and maroon. I can't wait to meet lots of new faces this year!

Tyler Stillings

Originally from Washington Court House, Ohio, I am in my final year studying Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC.  My hobbies include roller coasters, historical architecture, music, and learning foreign languages.  After living in Japan for six months, I'm back in Cincinnati and ready to help out with Leadership at the Newman Center!  St. Monica St. George has been an incredible home-away-from-home, and I've been blessed to be able to participate in their activities!

Jen Weber

Hi, I'm Jen!  I'm a St. MoGo's Intern, and a senior Biology major.  No, I'm not pre-med... I study ecology, and I'm interested in saving the world.  My favorite place on the planet is the Canadian Rockies.  All my best stories come from there.  As for other interests, I enjoy making jewelry, and I am fascinated by religious studies, particularly the impact of biblical writings across history and culture.

The Outreach Team focuses on reaching out to the UC community to draw more students into the Newman Center.  It also works to connect with the parish community, the campus community, and other faith communities around Cincinnati.

Chad Muhlenkamp

I was born in and raised out in the country on a dairy farm up in Coldwater about 2 hours north of Cincinnati. I am a senior majoring in entrepreneurship and looking to go full time in my on-line business through Amway Global. I enjoy playing ultimate frisbee, football, baseball, tennis, pretty much any sport. I also enjoy board games such as Risk Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, and many others. Pretty much if it’s a game physical or mental count me in. If you see me around feel free to say hi and introduce yourself. You would make my day as I like meeting new people.

Alex Spidare

Third year
Marketing
I chose to be on outreach because I believe reaching out is essential to spreading the good news of the Gospel.

Erin Armao

Erin is a second year Neuroscience major from Akron, Ohio. She chose to join the outreach team so she could encourage other students to get involved in the great community at St. Monica-St. George. She looks forward to meeting all sorts of new people and welcoming them to the Church this year.

Phillip Langenkamp

I grew up in the small town of Coldwater in Western Ohio (about an hour northwest of Dayton). I am the second oldest of 11 children (One older brother, two younger brothers, and seven younger sisters). I am in my third year of Chemical Engineering here at UC, and I am actively involved in many groups on campus, including Engineering Tribunal, Engineering Ambassadors, other random groups, and of course, the St. Monica-St. George Newman club! I lector and sing in the choir at church, so you may see me up there from time to time. I also am on the SMSG worship committee. As far as hobbies go, I love playing the piano, reading a good book, cooking, gardening and hanging out with friends. I am interested in just about everything, and I am always trying to learn something new. Feel free to friend me on Facebook or drop me an e-mail if you ever have a question!

Nick Thorvaldsen

I'm a second year Civil Engineering major, and I'm from Loveland Ohio, a city about twenty five minutes northeast of Cincinnati. I decided to be on the outreach team to apply what the Lord calls us to do everyday, by reaching out and loving our neighbors. I wanted to also get more involved at St. Monica St. George to build stronger community with my fellow christian brethren, and grow in faith as well. I love to play sports, listen to music, read an epic book, play  solid board games, do outdoor stuff, have fun goofing around with my friends, and dabbling with the guitar.

Julie Wagner

My name is Julie Wagner.  I am a senior majoring in Psychology.  I chose to be on the Outreach team because I would really like to get more groups involved with St. Monica-St. George.  Forming a community where other UC students, faith groups, and Newman Clubs feel welcome is a major goal that I hope to accomplish this year.

Social Justice Team
The Social Justice Team focuses on working to build the Kingdom of God by working for justice in a variety of ways including the Spring Break Mission Trips and the annual Social Justice Retreat.

Jennifer Colley

My name is Jennifer Colley, and I am a second year architecture student minoring in sustainable urban engineering.  I chose to be on the Social Justice Team because I am interested in promoting the dignity of all humans and a respect for all creation.  I hope participating on this team will teach me to better promote these concerns within the community and develop a better sense of how I can implement themes of social justice in my future career.

Keith Schomaker

Name: Keith Schomaker
Major: International Relations
Year: Junior
Why Social Justice Team? If you just walk one or two blocks off campus, you will begin to see just some of the issues of homelessness and the way the poor in our own city are treated. You can see the unsustainable toll on the environment and the violence towards one another. With all these bad thing comes hope and change, and I wanted to be a part of that change, and that is why I am a leader for our social justice team.

Jenny Looby

My name is Jenny Looby and I am in my second year at UC. I am majoring in Early Childhood Education, and working on a certificate in deaf studies. I chose to be on the Social Justice Leadership Team because I wanted to become more actively involved with St. Monica St. George, I wanted to learn more about the social injustices that are happening in our community, and I wanted to more actively participate in the struggle to promote equality.

Ali Kirwen

My name is Ali Kirwen and I am a third year student majoring in Social Work.  This is my first year on the leadership team as a part of the Social Justice Committee, and I am excited to be the Breakfast Brigade Coordinator.  I look forward to a year of growth and learning within this community.

Meghan Moore

My name is Meghan Moore and I am a fourth year in biomedical engineering.  I am also an intern for St. Monica-St. George and on the Social Justice Leadership Team.  I chose to get involved with St. Monica-St. George because it is a fun, welcoming atmosphere with many opportunities for spiritual growth, meeting new people, and service opportunities.  I also have three sisters and enjoying playing volleyball and dancing.

Architecture, 2010
Social Justice is the most dynamic, challenging, and under-recognized part of our Catholic faith, uniting spirituality with reality. By being a part of planning our activities, I help bring light to our joint responsibility to support and care for all of creation and the meaning and dignity in everyday decisions and people.  The most rewarding part is realizing that each minute brings change and growth to both my peers and those we serve.
