Undergraduate Olypmics

As a Catholic Community comprised of college aged students, we want to extend hospitality to the University in general and to Catholics on campus in particular.

The population of campus is huge, around 35,000 students!  Many students may have difficulty making connections and community to help sustain them.

We want all students (no matter what faith tradition or no tradition at all) to feel welcome here!

We offer hospitality to students through candy grams, greeting people at church, annual spring Upperclass and Communter dinner, and other activities.

We also recognize that we live in a multi-cultural, interreligious world.  We strive to reach out across class, race, ethnic, and religous boundaries to make friends and bring a spirit of goodwill for all people.

As members of a full parish, we recognize that we are not the only members of our faith community.  We have lots of non student parishioners:  moms and dads, babies, grandparents.  The whole gambit of parish life.  We want our student and non-student parishioners to feel connected with one another.  We organize students to teach our Parish School of Religion for an All-Saint's Day class!  If you like kids, this is the program for you!

As members of the Clifton community, we recognize our role in being good neighbors.  We seek to help the neighborhood through service.

Parish School of Religion - All Saint's Day
Every year, we teach classes around All Saint's Day.  This year we focused on St. Francis and the St. Francis Pledge, to help our young student understand the importance of taking care of the environmet.

PSR THOUGHTS

We taught 5-8 grade. We started with an opening prayer and then went into discussion about St. Francis. We highlighted some facts about him. That led us into a discussion about treating our Earth the way he did. We then took the kids into a room where we set up 13 things that were "wrong" (environmentally) and let the kids find them in groups.

We had a great time and I feel that the kids got a lot out of it. They knew a lot more about living sustainably than I ever did at that age. It was a positive experience.

PSR THOUGHTS

We educated the 1st and 2nd graders about what all goes into a landfill, what we can do to stop the growth of landfills, and how landfills are managed.
We did it by making a delectable representation of a landfill with a different goody symbolising each component that fills them. The kids really liked it, and they were so enamored by the food making going on that they were hardly paying attention to what was said.
It surprised me how much they already knew, especially when talking about how to recycle. I thought it went really well, and was fun for everybody!

Crosstown Preachout Mass
Each year, our basketball teams battle it out on the court.   But in the winter quarter, the Catholic Communities of UC and Xavier meet for a Preachout Mass.  Whichever teams hosts the basketball game, hosts the other school to their student liturgy.  The guest priest preaches the homly.  We all meet afterward to meet new people and eat together.  It's a great time!
