2008-2009 Season
Cirencester 7s
Some tough competition today but some great rugby played.
Well done to Hope on your first game, Sarah I thought was on a dead cert to get a well deserved try but it was just not to be.
Great way to finish up the season well done to all girls I think you have done well all season.
Marys Girls U15 and U18 v Taunton
Tough games against the Taunton Fillies today,
Both U15s and U18s were communicating well today and looking for the off loads before the tackles.
Some nice solo runs today from Emma in the U18s and Emma in the U15s and a great run from Alice L to score a well deserved try.
Today's games were about having fun for the Touring Taunton Fillies and getting a run out and I think everybody enjoyed the games and the day, Well done and thanks to all.
Mary’s girls lose away to Cirencester 12 – 37
Great weather today and some great rugby
played, nice try from Nichole which happened from some nice passing phases
where all the girls looked for the
unload before taking the contact and the
ball reached Nichole who with a small
dummy and a great side step she scored under the post for Zoe to convert.
Great solo run from Emma who was just too
fast for our support players and had to go alone. Emma came from the left wing
in our 22 to sidestep, skip and outpace 5 or 6 Cirencester girls and score on the
right wing corner. The angle was just too much for Zoe to convert. (Emma has
been told she must run straighter and get it under the post for Zoe next time.)
With Abi as Captain for the game the first
half was looking good with a half time score of 12 – 15 to Cirencester. We normally
wake up in the second half but today this just did not happen, with some missed
tackles Cirencester just ploughed through to win the day.
Thanks to the Cirencester Team for a great
day
Shuswap Yeti from Canada.
Some cracking girl’s rugby was played against the touring visitors Shuswap Yeti from Canada.
With the St Marys girls playing sevens rugby for the first time, they
found it was a fast paced game. It was a pleasure to watch this game
and some fantastic rugby was played. Alice took a nice pass at speed
just outside their 22 and graced though to put the ball down under the
post. It was then that the Canadians experience at sevens came through
showing some good handling skills and using the space to run in 2 tries
against us.
Full time was St Marys Girls 1 Shuswap 4
Yatton
diamonds then played the Canadians and put on a great display of speed
and agility by using some of their fast paced girls to beat the
Canadians 3 tries to 2.
To give our
visitors a break St Marys then played Yatton at 12 a side for a short
game before we ended the night with a Barbarians team of St Marys and
Yatton v the Canadians.
This time Shuswap Yeti had got over their jet lag and showed how good a side they were and won 7 tries to nil.
Well
done to Page on your first game with the girl’s team and Nichole for
having the stamina to still be the only one chasing the ball at the end
of the night.
Now to make it sound like an awards ceremony
Thanks to Yatton for being a great friendly team that we are able to mix with.
Thanks to the Canadians for choosing us to play against.
Thanks to the Ref for refereeing what ended up 4 games.
Thanks to all that came along to support us.
Thanks to Adrian Siddorn and the SMOB staff.
And a
BIG thanks to all the parents, as events like these would not happen without your support.

The
wet muddy conditions did not help with tackling today but for some
reason it did spurn St Marys on in the 2nd half of the game.
Newport
were 29 - 0 up in the first half with some very good looping and switch
moves that caught Marys on the wrong foot a few times. With the muddy
conditions Mary's found it hard to keep hold of players once they had
made the tackle.
Yet
again we woke up in the second half and started to put some good moves
in ourselves, Nichole starting to make decisions dependent on the
situation was great, Support play was great for the whole of the second
half and once you got use to the mud your handling skills picked up.
The second half we only conceded the one try, yet we managed to get 27 points on the board for ourselves. Well done to Amy on your first game.
The
pictures show how much effort you all put in to today's game and to try
and pick a player of the match was hard so I have picked 2, Nichole for her decision making and the determination she put in for today and Sarah for her good support play all through the game and the tackle that counted.
Full time Newport 34 - Marys 27
Thanks to Newport for a great game and being a great sports minded team.
Oops nearly forgot the Ginger Ninger, you know who you are.
Home Mary's v Cardiff Quin's
Yet another tough game against the Quins, great to see everyone getting stuck in today and some great rush defence work.
Nice run from Emma who thought she would run a few extra meters before running down the wing to the try line.
Everyone's work rate was much better today with everyone getting stuck in. well done
Great day away against Sherborne and Exeter
The Barbarians U18s team winning well and the under 15s team putting up a very spirited fight in both games.
A
few players were played out of position today but I think it worked
well. We competed well in the line outs and I think we only lost the
one line out. Our scrummaging was great today and even up against a
larger pack we only lost two scrums all day.

Support play was there today and dealing with the breakdowns, we were just lacking in committed tackles.
Not sure who scored the try as all I could see was six pairs of hands making sure the ball went over the try line.
Great stuff today girls.
Away. Cardiff Quins - Marys
Hard game against Cardiff Quins but several good points came out of the game.
Passing was coming together today and it was good to see the ball being shipped out and good to see 2nd and 3rd phase ball.
Our
defence was a bit ropey today with too many players getting sucked in
to the break downs leaving big holes for the Quins to run through.
Great to see both Alice’s providing support play and trying to be first to the ball.
Rosa making good runs when she ran straight with good support play from Shauna.
Nichole doing well and getting fast ball out and getting stuck in and digging the ball out
Beki, Emma and Zoe (player of the match) making the great tackles.
Well done to all

Away. Cinderford 62 - Marys 5
A
very slow start today it did not help with the cold conditions and
somebody having to go back home and get the shirts (oops sorry) this
lead to a lot of hanging around.
Conditions were cold and not ideal but everyone played well.
We still seem to have a problem with second phase ball but by the second half it was getting there.
Well done to Rosa for a well fought for try.
Although we made some cracking tackles Cinderford's support play was just to good.
Stepping over the ball, Rucking it was all there today
Home. Marys 5 - Cirencester 10
Great game of rugby today,
A
very good start for Mary’s where we must have stayed camped out in the
Cirencester half of the pitch for a good 10 minutes right from the
start but just could not turn the pressure in to a try, which is a
credit to Cirencester's defence.
Conditions were not ideal which
resulted in a few handling errors, but over-all, both the attacking and
defence play was very good - probably the best team play seen for a
while.
We started making some good moves and as always had some
strong running and tackling from Becs and Emma, and not to be outdone
it was great to see all of the squad stepping up to the mark and
playing as a team and communicating well, with Abi as Captain things
were looking well.
Well done to Zoe who read the game well,
dropping back when needed and coming in to the line from the full back
position to create the overlap and score a nice try in the corner.
Cirencester made good use of the ball and with some good support play ran in 2 tries against us.
The
one criticism I would make is we need to get our body positions right
when we take the ball in to contact and ruck over the ball more, we
shall be working on this in the coming weeks.
The ball skill work
we have been doing over the past few weeks have now started to pay off,
with Safe hands Sophie making some fine catches.
Special mention has to go to Guinan, well done and played on your first game, Alice L also played well today.
All coaches, parents and supporters were proud of an excellent performance.
Well done Cirencester and thanks for a good game.
Injury update: Abi has a few fractured ribs from putting her body on the line for the great cause of St Mary's.
We wish her a speedy recovery and if you have any funny text messages
that you could send her I am sure see will appreciate a good giggle.

Away. Yatton 54 - Marys 7
With
the girls now starting to pay attention to training and attend training
sessions, things were much better. Tackles were being made, Stepping
over the ball, Rucking was there and just putting on general pressure
made Yatton give away the ball.
It just shows that you can do it. Today was a great game to watch well done to you all.
Thanks to Yatton for being great host.
Home. Marys 14 - Yatton 80
Great
start of the season first game against Yatton. We were beaten by the
very much better side but this gives us a bench mark to start from and
start improving from this point on.
Lots of work to do during training on skills, fitness and ball handling before the away rematch in 2 weeks time.
Lots of things we should have been doing today and lots we should of not have done.
The best part for me today was the fact that not one player gave up trying and you all put your best in.
Well done to Emma for 2 great tries and Zoe for converting both. Team work got those tries
Hope you all enjoyed your first game, Thanks to Yatton for a good game.
