THEME IDEAS

• From author Hazel Edwards 
• As omega3 is supposed to be 'brain food', a focus could be on fish stories, fishing books, fishing gear (displayed)
• A sub theme could include 'Spark up with red hot reading' - focussing on'hot' topics - both fiction and non-fiction.
• Focus on nutrition books, sites
• An interesting quote from 'Dr Seuss'....Nonsense wakes up the brain cells. And it helps develop a sense of humor, which is awfully important in this day and age......Focus on humorous books, jokes, riddles etc  Some sites...Jokes for kids , Kids Fun Zone 
• Another great quote...'Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body' ....Joseph Addison 1672-1719. Using this quote as a basis, you could tie in the Olympics or sportspeople. Locate fiction and non fiction books on sporting themes for a display. If you have some contacts with well known sportspeople, invite them to talk about books they liked to read as students, or take a photo of them reading their favourite book, enlarge and use as a poster with the caption: xxxxxx caught 'fuelling their mind', for example.

• How about the 'Book Olympics'? A book talk marathon, perhaps where each person could be timed to see who can talk about a particular book the longest!

ACTIVITIES

• Encourage your students to use their thinking skills by using this free 'Intel' product to rank the picture books (for example). They must also justify the rankings!  Students could develop the criteria themselves or use criteria supplied from the CBC

Where do you think Aaron Blabey found the inspiration regarding the naming of his characters 'Pearl Barley' and 'Charlie Parsley'?

Do you think he may have had an interest in musical theatre and jazz?

Particularly during the 1950's........is Pearl named after a singer/dancer who once played the lead in 'Carmen Jones'? Is Charlie named for a renowned jazz musician whose specialty was bebop and who played an instrument with an underslung octave key? 

Ask your students to comment using the Book Week Blog  under 'Activities' above.

DISPLAY IDEAS

• Related to the 'omega3 brain food theme idea above....display a variety of fishing gear, cellophane hanging fish etc
• Connect the theme to the Olympics in a display
• Photographic display of individual teachers, students , members of the community (particularly if you can encourage someone well known) each reading something they enjoy. Mount as an A3 poster with the caption ' Joe Bloggs 'fuelling' his mind.'
