Hints and tips on how to write a good application!

1. Full name PLUS the committee/group you're applying on behalf of, if relevant.

2. Full address. If you live in Mary's, put the whole college address. If you live out, put your term time address.

3. The application must be of BENEFIT to to college/JCR/MCR. Not just something you fancy getting for the sake of it. Previous applications have included items such as a new drum kit, a PA system for college, furniture for the new JCR office, and stash for a new sports team.

Recurring purchases, such as Stash, are unlikely to be successful unless they show an obvious benefit to the college and an improvement.

4. A lot of the application may depend on this section. Where will you store the item? Whose responsibility will it be to ensure it's looked after? Are there any risk involved? College may not be happy putting forward money towards an arsenal of paint ball guns or a flame thrower (however interesting that would be to buy :P!)

5. Having an EXACT breakdown of items to be purchased makes the application much more transparent, and therefore more likely to be successful. Put them in a table, with the item, quantity, price and total. If you're asking for money to secure an event against making a financial loss, include a budget showing how you plan to break even and financial prudence.

6. Who are you getting the purchase from? Show that you've done your homework and looked for a good, reputable supplier that provides a suitable product at a reasonable cost. Unfortunately, places such as Tesco and Ikea often don't come under this heading!

7. Sign the application. Don't forget!

8. Date the application and make sure you get it in on time- I've watched excellent applications get rejected as they are a few days late and there's nothing I can do about it.

9. 1-2 pages of research is enough.

10. Check your spelling and grammar. There is nothing worse than an application "wanting sum money for teh right equipment for the colleeg band" - however school-orientated that sounds, it is is SCR members and they are out to be persuaded and impressed

11. Hand it into the college office when completete

The committee is made up of SCR members, college staff and so it is vital that the application impresses if we are to get funding for JCR activities

Good luck - if you want any further help don't hesitate to contact me he JCR Treasurer
