Starting off the season spectacularly in Michaelmas term, SMCWFC have
failed to disappoint during Epiphany and have continued being amazing.
The term started with the first round of the Floodlit cup against a top
Premiership team, John Snow. They scored just before half time, however
SMWCFC stepped up in the second half, Suthe Yogalingam, Joana Grifo and
Sarah Reischbock scored within minutes of each other and the score
finished 3 – 2 to Mary’s A. Following a no show from Trevs A for the
quarter finals, we’ve reached the semi finals of the Floodlit! Epiphany
also saw SMCWFC beat Hild Bede A 9 nil in the quarter finals of the
Knockout Cup. Being promoted and securing places in the semi finals of
both the Floodlit and Knockout Cup is a huge achievement, a massive well
done to everyone who has taken part... we might even end the season
next term with some silverware!

Mary's are currently
10th out of 16 in the college sport league table! Furthermore, we are
only 10 points behind Trevs in 9th and 12 behind Cuth's in 8th, so
there's still a good chance of us moving up next term! Well done to
everyone who has contributed to the points table, it's a big improvement
on last year when we were sat in last place for quite a while...
A few team reports...
WOMEN'S HOCKEY Our last game of the season saw
Mary’s score more than double last terms total in one game. A very
convincing 5-1 win against Cuth’s allowed Club Captain Fitton to get the
first hat trick of the season. The game was a little scrappy, with
goals coming after some really poor defending by Cuth’s. On the positive
side, we were much more confident in the D, with more people giving it a
go. The first goal came from Alice, closely followed by Emily’s and
again by Alice. Somehow we fluffed up in defence before half time,
allowing Cuth’s to get a goal on the score sheet. The second half saw 2
more goals, firstly by Pip, and then Alice’s 3rd to seal the win. The
game was a bit messy and panicked, but job done, 3 points and a great
score! Well done to Emily for player of the match.
Having been promoted to the Premiership, Mary’s women’s hockey
faced a challenging year. The graduation of some key great players left
holes in the team which were filled well by an influx of great freshers.
Mary’s struggled during the first term, and despite some great play,
actually scoring goals was rather tricky. However, after Christmas the
standard of hockey improved massively, with a draw against Hatfield and a
win against Collingwood and Ustinov, taking us well out of the
relegation zone to finish 4th in the league at Easter with only a couple
of games to play. Goals were contributed by quite a few players, with
our highest scorers including Pip Bonsall, Emma Newton, Holly Colvin and
Alice Fitton. Highlights of the season include Alice Nichols
skilfully dribbling the ball half the pitch in the wrong direction and
Rosie ‘loose’ McEwen-Smith scoring a goal, which means the men have now
lost a bet and will be dressing as slutty cheerleaders to come and
support our last game of the season.
Naomi Booth
SQUASH Squash has been very successful at
Mary's this year, with the women’s team coming 3rd in their league and
the men’s team winning theirs. Well done and thank you to everyone who
has played this year!

RUGBY It was a year of revival for the men’s
rugby team. Having lost yet more of the core players at the beginning of
the season, it was time for the new blood to make their mark on the
team. They took the words right outta my mouth and by the end of the
season, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
At the beginning of the season we struggled to find our feet
against two very well organised Stockton teams, and with our team
captain out with the elusive "maggot neck" it really was out of the
frying pan and into the fire. However as time progressed, we began to
find our strengths and work to then desperate to get our 45 seconds of
ecstasy.
With our new game plan we saw players like Alex Taylor breaking
through the line like a bat out of hell, Ian Ackroyd putting the rubber
to the road on the wing and Alex Kerr proving he can't scrum and he
can't run. Well I suppose two outta three aint bad.
As matches started to go our way, the team was brought together
and new friendships were forged whilst old one were reinforced. The
monster was loose and teams started to realise that Marys was a real
force in college rugby. We finished the season winning 4 matches and
osing 6, a great improvement on last year and shows that we would do
anything for a try, but we won't do that.
On a personal note, I want to wish all the lads all the success
for the seasons beyond. It has been a real privilege playing and
captaining SMCRFC and I will hold the memories (the few I have after the
socials took the toll) very dear.
Remember guys, rock and roll dreams can come true...

BASKETBALL The Basketball team had a shaky
start to the season losing their first three league games and the first
round of the cup. However we are currently on a 4 game winning streak
with two games to play. We were top of the league after last weekend
(the 14th march) and are hoping for third place at the end of the
season. This year we've won our first competitive match in three seasons
and have really come together as a team in the later part of the
season. This was down to a huge contribution from fresher George
Callender. It was the women’s debut season and they won 3 out of 6
league matches and sadly lost their first round cup match. Excellent
performance all round.
Dan Lowrie
LACROSSE The Mixed Lacrosse team has continued
to field an impressive side of upcoming Freshers this term, with
particular mention to Noah Hillyard and James Brown consistently
supporting from centre and defence and also representing Durham
University in League games. In spite of many pitch cancellations the
club has managed to play some matches and partake in a fun
inter-collegiate lacrosse tournament in the last weekend of term. The
club got through to the quarter-finals to lose to St Johns, arguably the
largest and most talented college team to ever be seen, and all played
exceptionally well! Earlier on in the term SMC played John’s in a
toughly contested match, and should be proud of their performance. We
sadly lost to Collingwood, who stand 2nd in the college league table at
present. The team has had great success outside of fixtures too; at
the beginning of term St Mary’s were the undisputable victors of a joint
social with Hatfield College that saw the teams challenge each other
down the Bailey to Klute. Practices, when possible, have also been great
fun and we can look forward to summer 7s tournaments after exams with
much anticipation!
Pip Bonsall
Hope you have had a good term and enjoy a well-deserved rest over
the holiday.

Netball
Mary’s netball has strengthened as a club above all else. Despite maybe not
having the most wins on the score sheet the growth in size and commitment of
the club has been encouraging. Maintaining their previous rankings in their
respective leagues; premiership and division 2, both teams have fought hard for
their places. With such a large B team squad it is more than likely that a C
team will be formed next year which just goes to show the increased
involvement.

Women’s Football
The season started promisingly for the Women’s Football Team, winning our
first four league games, scoring 35 goals and conceding 0 whilst doing so. A
10 nil win against Chads A and then a Hild Bede B forfeit has lead to
promotion to the Premiership. After beating Johns A 5 -1 and then proceeding
to the quarter finals to beat Hild Bede A 9 nil we have reached the semi
finals of the Knockout Cup! First round of the floodlit cup Marys A
faced a Premiership side who had won 4 out of 5 of their league games. Going
in as the underdogs Mary's girls never expected to progress further in the
Cup. After putting up a strong fight John Snow managed to score just before
half time. As the 2nd half started Mary's dominated the play, Suthe
Yogalingam scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Joana Grifo
followed by scoring literally a minute after and the final Mary's goal was
scored by Sarah Reischbock soon after. Scoring 3 goals within 7 minutes of
each other the girls were estatic. A dodgy corner kick may have reached the
back of the Mary's net from a defending player's head... but final score
Marys A 3 - 2 John Snow A. This win leads them into the quarter finals of the
Floodlit cup.

Men’s Football
It's been a terrific season so far for men's football, currently unbeaten in
their last 11 games. Sitting at the top of the division 1 promotion pool,
Mary's only need one more win from their two remaining games for promotion.
They are also still in both the knockout cup and the floodlit cup quarter
finals, with big games against Hatfield and Aidan's coming up. In the floodlit
cup in particular big things are expected from a team that knocked out Mildert in
the last 16.
Men’s Hockey
The men's hockey team are having a fantastic season in division 1, and are
close to guaranteeing themselves promotion with at least 3 or 4 games remaining,
an incredible achievement. The team is sitting top of the division with 8 wins
and a draw from 9 games and a goal difference of +34, having only conceded 4
goals all season. A close quarter-final in the knockout cup saw Mary's lose 3-2
to Josephine Butler after leading 2-0 at half time. However comparing Butler's
8 university players to Mary's 1, this was an excellent result.
Women’s Hockey
The Women’s Hockey team started off reasonably well in their first term in the
Premiership, but were lacking team coordination and drive. However, after the
Christmas break the team is now working together brilliantly, with every player
on the pitch making skillful contributions throughout each match. The consistently
solid performances of the girls this
term has lead to a 1-1 draw against top of the league team Hatfield followed by
a win against a strong Collingwood team, despite hangovers all round.
Rugby
Mary’s rugby faced some difficult matches early on against some of the top
teams in the league and despite some spirited performances, found themselves
struggling on the field and off the field with various injuries and
afflictions, most of them ‘maggot’ based. As the intensity of the rugby began
to match the intensity of the socials, Aidans B and Trevs A were brutally put
to the sword. Carnage on the weather front (and in various bars on the Hill)
saw a lack of playing time. Everyone was at least in agreement over the wise
investment in an ‘all-weather’ pitch by those at Maiden Castle. However, with
the team back playing well, with competition for places, Grey B have been
dispatched and the team is looking to close out the season unbeaten in 4.
Frankly, had it not been for Mike Walker’s invention of a stretch where you put
one leg in front of the other, Jonno Lawrence’s entirely necessary headgear, or
Mike Gaunt’s voluntary nudity at any social, the team couldn’t have reached the
dizzying heights it has.
Badminton
Whilst the team has to be praised for fighting it out as a completely new club
in a vicious and testing environment of elite college sport, real praise has to
be given to the addition of Harry Millett who has seen the club move further
and further up the league rankings under his tutelage. Fleeting appearances
from Tom ‘I could play Uni’ Horn have masked the valuable contributions of many
members that has seen fantastic wins over long-established clubs. Chris ‘Mouse’
Pye’s momentary distraction thanks to a female Hilde Bede fresher was a minor
blip. The women have shown a fierce competitive streak and are pushing for
promotion, as has the mixed team, blossoming under the guidance provided by
random Egyptian man. As a Chinese proverb once said, or more likely in the
proverbial words of club captains Anja Hutchinson and Sophie Fenton, the only
way is up.
Squash
Squash has been very promising this
season, with the women currently in 3rd position in their league but hoping to
make this 2nd or even 1st when the final games have been played. The men have
had some good matches, with some great wins. A number of new players have taken
up squash this year and have played in matches, and this gives us hope for an
even more successful season next year.
Basketball
The Men’s Basketball team have had their most successful season ever thanks to
the addition of a few outstanding freshers, especially George Callender and
James Tutton. We still have 4 games to play but have won 2, lost 3 so far.
Sadly we were knocked out in the first round of the cup despite a great performance.
The women’s team won 3 and lost 3 in their debut season which is impressive seeing
as most of them hadn't played basketball before.

The season started promisingly for SMCWFC, winning our first four
league games, scoring 35 goals and conceding 0 whilst doing so. This
unbeaten run however was stopped by Hatfield, Mary’s playing with 10
men by the end of the game went from a goal up to lose 2 – 1. Having
lost our place at the top of Division 1 the girls were all keen to make
up for their unlucky defeat against Hatfield when they faced Chads A
the next day. A 10 nil win against Chads A and then a Hild Bede B
forfeit meant that SMCWFC were promoted into the Premiership! From
barely being able to scrape a team together just last year we have
improved hugely and the girls should be very proud of themselves. We
faced Premiership Team in the first round of the Knockout Cup halfway
through Michaelmas Term, beating Johns A 5 -1 and then proceeding to
the quarter finals to beat Hild Bede A 9 nil we have reached the semi
finals of the Knockout Cup! The first round of the Floodlit Cup took
place during the first week of Epiphany term, having not trained
together for 2 months and facing John Snow, a Premiership team 2nd in
the league our hopes were not high. John Snow scored just before half
time, however SMWCFC stepped up in the second half and the score
finished 3 – 2 to Mary’s A. 3 goals scored within minutes of each
other. Moving into the quarter finals of the Floodlit Cup we have been
drawn against a fellow Division 1 team, Trevs A. Having already beaten
them this season I am confident that we can progress even further in
the Floodlit Competition. SMCWFC also field a 6 a side team, having
been promoted last year in the 6 a side league we have proved that we
deserve to be there recently beating Castle A 2 nil and sitting
comfortably in 2nd place. Well done and thank you to everyone who
has taken part in Marys Women’s Football this season, your hard work
and commitment has been recognised by getting promoted and maybe we
will even end the season with some silverware...

Mary’s 21 - 6
Chad’s
In their final fixture of the season, Mary’s Netball
stormed to victory against St Chad’s College.
After a rather successful season which included a phenomenal smashing of
Hatfield early in 2010, the final match saw the team continue with their usual
enthusiasm and dynamic ability. Mary’s
pulled the score line away to their favour straight away in the first quarter,
with Katey Popova and Kirsty Bond maintaining their strong shooting double act.
This continued throughout the match
leading Mary’s to have a very comfortable leads at both half time and the end
of the third quarter. Despite the
majority of the defenders falling victim to Mary’s precariously wet court,
defence was strong and sustained. Chad’s
only achieved six successful shots on goal and these came early on in the match
– coincidently these were also scored during Mary’s Rugby practice on the
neighbouring field, so it’s obvious that eyes were elsewhere! Mary’s 21-6
victory over Chad’s marked the final competitive match for the team’s third
years and sees the loss of “Team Special” from the club’s ranks. The 2009/10 season has been full of ups and
downs but sees the team finishing mid-table, which is a very respectable finish
for a team more likely to be seen in Klute than actually at practice.

Mary’s
sport has got off to a strong start this year, and we are slowly moving up the
college points table. We are currently tenth, but Castle are only a few points
behind us so we need to keep winning to maintain our position or move up.
The
newly established teams such as Mixed Lacrosse, Badminton, Women’s Rugby,
Women’s Basketball and Women’s Squash are doing well so far. The Women’s
Badminton team are top of Division One so far, so let’s hope they can
maintain this position next term. Mixed Lacrosse are in third place in
Pool B, with one particularly good 10-3 win over Castle.
Women’s
Rugby has some enthusiastic and determined
players, and will hopefully grow in numbers as the year progresses. Whilst the Men’s
Rugby team have had a shaky start to the season, their recent 57-5 win over
Aidan’s B followed by a 52-15 thrashing of Trevs A has boosted their confidence
for next term.
Mary’s
Men’s hockey team are dominating Division One this year, having scored
24 more goals than the team in second place, despite having played 1 less game.
The Women’s Hockey team have not yet fulfilled their potential but still
sit mid-table in the Premiership with some strong players in the team, so
hopefully next term will bring more wins.
One
of the most successful teams in Mary’s so far this year is Women’s Football
; unbeaten in their league and heading for promotion, they are also second
place in the top division of the Astro-League and into the next stage of the
Knockout Cup. The Men’s Football team have also had a number of good
matches this term, in particular a 3-0 win in the Floodlit Cup against a strong
Van Mildert side who had six Uni players.
A
strong Women’s Squash team are second in the league so far, having
played one less game than the top team, and only losing one game through a
mix-up involving a walkover against Mary’s. Though the men’s team have not been
as successful so far, they are hopeful for next term.
The Pool
team is currently doing well, with Mary's A in joint second place in Division
1, and Mary’s B fifth place in Division 3.
Women’s
Basketball, a new team this year, recently
Won 52 - 16 against Butler, which is the best basketball score Mary’s has had
yet. Last but not least, a very excited Men’s Basketball team won their
first match in two years. Fingers crossed there will not be such a long gap
until the next win!
We
can only keep gaining points by winning matches, and the more teams we have
entered into leagues the more chance we have of winning! Furthermore, we really
need to support the teams we already have entered into leagues, so do think
about going along and joining in, it’s not too late to try something new.
In
particular, Women’s Rugby really needs more players. It is a fun, sociable way
to keep fit and meet new people, so if you fancy giving it a try, get in touch
with Jonno Lawrence: j.g.lawrence@durham.ac.uk.
There
will be some one-off Women’s Cricket matches next term, and a cricket coach
available to teach us, so if anyone has any experience and can help out, or is
a beginner and wants to learn, please let me know.
If
there's something you've always wanted to do that Mary's doesn't offer and
are interested in setting up a new team get in contact with me (a.f.fitton@durham.ac.uk.)
Finally,
keep your eyes peeled for details about the St Mary’s College Sportsman’s Ball!

forget to keep checking the sports page of the website for team results and
