JCR Meetings

 What is the JCR?

Apart from three different rooms, the JCR is St Mary’s College undergraduate student body, i.e. it’s in charge of college students’ affairs and is the body with which you will identify with in St Mary’s.  The JCR is here to represent your interests and is entirely student driven. As such you are able and encouraged to get involved. The JCR meets three times a term where important issues are debated.  There is also an Executive Committee, the mugshots of whom you can find here.

Introduction to JCR Meetings

JCR meetings are held three times a term; they are the place where all JCR business is discussed and information relevant to the members of the JCR is passed on.

It is also a forum in which all members of the JCR can air views or concerns they may have regarding the running of the JCR or College, and can question any officers of the JCR over any issue relating to their position which they feel is important for the JCR to discuss, whether it be an ordinary member of a JCR committee or the JCR President.

JCR meetings always take the same format:

  • The minute of the previous meeting are discuss and matter arising from the previous meeting (such as action taken as a result of motions which passed) is summarised).
  • Motions submitted to the Chair before the deadline are read out, discussed and voted upon
  • Any questions of officers are read and answered by the officer concerned.
  • Exec members give their reports and questions are invited from JCR members.
  • There is a short break to allow people wishing to stand for election to a JCR position to submit their nomination.
  • Elections of JCR positions are then held with each nomination slip being read out, candidate husting (if called for) and voting.
  • There is an opportunity for any other business to be raised (such as announcements) by anyone in the JCR.
  • The meeting closes.

Gowns must be worn to JCR meetings and only members of St Mary’s JCR may attend, unless approval from all those there is given to allow someone else in.

All motions for a JCR meeting must be submitted by 6pm on the Wednesday before the meeting (or two weeks before for any financial motion) to the JCR Chair.

JCR meetings are compulsory for Liver's In.  All apologies need to be submitted by noon on the Sunday of the meeting.  The relevant form can be found at the bottom of the page.
