Welcome to St Mary’s College

Introduction from your Senior Freshers’ Rep

Well, this calls for some celebration, doesn’t it? You’ve got the grades that are your ticket to the best college in one of the country’s top universities! (This time two years ago I was drinking champagne prior to jumping into a freezing cold lake in New Zealand, but I’m sure you’ll find your own interpretations of ‘celebration’…)

University will be a massively prominent stage in your life, and probably a big change from what you’re used to. For many of you it will be your first time away from home, which naturally can be very daunting, but remember that however you are feeling, there will be a lot of other people with the same fears, concerns and uncertainties about what is to come. If you have any worries while you are here there is always someone to talk to.

For the next year (at least), Mary’s will be the place where you sleep, eat, work and play, and we’re sure that pretty soon you will come to consider it a second home. Every single one of you will make life long friends here – they might be on your corridor in the first term or on your course, or you might meet them in the dining hall, by joining a society or playing sport. The best advice we can give you in Freshers’ Week is to be yourself, be open-minded about everything you do and everyone you meet, and most of all embrace the distinctly friendly atmosphere of Mary’s.

This website is here to tell you a little bit about what life in Durham and specifically Mary’s is like, what you can expect from Freshers’ Week, what to bring, and to introduce you to some of the people who will be looking after you while you’re here. So may as well start with me! I’m Sarah, your Senior Freshers’ Rep. This essentially means it’s down to me to make sure your Freshers’ Week sets an obscenely high standard for the rest of your time in Durham!

Of course, you’re here to study and get a degree to take you into the big wide world, but a major part of University is obviously the experience, so (and you will lose count of how many times you hear this): make the most of it, work hard, but most importantly have fun!

See you in October!
