Volunteer Opportunities

Lend a helping hand at the Central Islip Civic Council.  Helpers are always in need.
  • Food Drive Coordinators needed.  Help to coordinate a food drive in your school, church, work place, club, troop etc...  Then, donate the collected food items to our emergency food pantry.  We serve over 3,000 families in need each year and are always in need of non-perishable items. (peanut butter, tuna, pasta, soup, dry or canned milk etc...)
  • Helpers are needed in our Thrift Store. Help to organize donations, price items, hang up clothes and  assist customers as needed.  No formal experience necessary.  Small groups are welcome.
  • Neighborhood Watch and Block Captains needed.  Help make your neighborhood a better place to live. Call us if you see street lights that are not working, big pot holes in the road, extremely littered roadways, graffiti, unsafe traffic conditions at pedestrian crossings, vacant or abandoned homes with littered or over grown lawns.
  • The Central Islip Civic Council holds "Special Community Events" during the year; they are held at the Central Islip Civic Council and locally throughout the Central Islip community.  Get involved and lend a hand; make event signs, hand out flyers at the event, help spread the word and tell your neighbors what is going on.  Even if only for an hour or two, your help is greatly appreciated.
  • Do you like to garden or grow flowers?  Then, give us a hand in our garden planting and maintaining exisiting flower beds, light weeding, watering, transplanting seedlings, making flower bouquets and harvesting vegetables etc… Our garden provides fresh vegetables for our food pantry which helps families in need with food on a monthly basis. Small groups are welcome.
  • Would you like to learn what it was like to live on a farm back in the 1800's?  How would you like to share what you learn with school children that visit us during school trips.  We offer a "Step Back in Time" program that revolves around what it was like for children to live on a homestead in the 1800's. During these trips we need volunteers to run a learning station that the children will visit during their short stay here at the Central Islip Civic Counci's Heines Homestead.
  • We offer High School and College students the opportunity to complete their community service requirements here at the Central Islip Civic Council. We are in walking distance from the Central Islp High School and close to public transportation.
  • Join our Parks Committee - Meetings are held at the Central Islip Recreation Center, 555 Clayton Street, CI at 7pm. Call for our next meeting date.
  • Hold a "School Supply Drive" for local families in need.  Help students get a head start in the right direction by sending them off to school in September with the tools they need.  Any kind of school supply items are appreciated.  Elementary, Intermediate, Middle and High School appropriate.
  • Donate your gently used Halloween Costumes for children in need for boys or girls.
  • Adopt a family in need for the holidays. Our "Santa to the Rescue" program gives you the opportunity to provide toys and/or needed clothing items (jacket, gloves, scarves etc...) to a local family from the Central Islip area.  For details contact - Gina at 348-0669 ext.18
