TWO UNION SOLDIERS
by Steven L. Driskell

I am hesitant about purchasing Civil War photographs due to the amount of fakes sold on the market.  However, this one contained names penciled in at the bottom and thought it would be an interesting project to find out who they are.  I posted the image on the Internet for 10 years with no response.

In March of 2010, I contacted the New England Civil War Museum and after exchanging a few emails, we may have names for these soldiers. John Tyrrell was identified by the Museum and by scanning the photograph at a higher resolution and reviewing the roster, Peckman was identified. Initially, the loop at the bottom of the P in Peckman made it appear to me as an L. No Leckman or Lickman in the same Company with Tyrrell was to be found in any reference. The roster of Company E, 27th Connecticut lists a Corporal John P. Tyrrell and Corporal Wm. H. Peckman. With forage caps in hand and newly issued frock coats, they probably posed for the photograph shortly before the Regiment left New Haven for the field on October 22, 1862.

The 27th Connecticut marched on to fight in the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsvile and Gettysburg. John Tyrrell was taken prisoner at Chancellorsville.  On July 27th, 1863 the Regiment completed the term of duty and mustered out of service in New Haven.

For a detailed account of the Regiment see The Twenty-seventh: A Regimental History by Winthrop Dudley Sheldon, 1866 (online in Google Books).
