Stimulants

A stimulant is a kind of drug that changes the way you think, how you act; they make your heart race, make you feel energenic jittery and nervous.

They Include:

Cocaine- “Which is made from the leaf of the coco plant, this drug often comes in the form of white powder that some people inhale through their nose.”

Crack- “A form of cocain that can be smoked.”

Amphetamines- “often called “speed,” these pills are sometimes prescribed by doctors for medical problems.”

Methamphetamine- “ A powerful form of amphetamine that comes in clear crystals (called “ice”) or powder (called “crank”) that’s is smoked or injected.”

Side Effects: Physically

-They speed up your breathing, and make your heart race

-Raise blood pressure

-Increase your activity

- physical dependence

- Using needles risk AIDS

-Damage brain

-sexual dysfunction

Side Effects: Mentally

-Sleeplessness

-Psychological dependence

-Anxiety

-Hallucinations

-depression

 

Depressants

Depressants  are a type of drug that slows down your central nervous system, and makes you depressed. Some of them the time they are used to escape boredom and to relieve sexual inhibitions.

They Include:

Barbiturates

Tranquilizers-Muscle relaxants

Phencyclidine-classified with hallucinogens

Sedative-hypnotics-hypnotic

Alcohol

Date Rape Drugs

            -Rohypnol-“roofies or ropies.”

            -GHB-Liquid ecstasy, or liquid X

            -Ketamine-

Side Effects: Physically

-depressants relax muscles

-they reduce heart rate

-slow your breathing

-slurred speech

-drowsiness

-a complete lack of coordination

-overdose, coma and death

Inhalants

Inhalants are chemicals that are sniffed, and when inhaled the fumes cause a feeling of being drunk. .


Physical Effects:

Nausea, sneezing, coughing, nosebleeds, tiredness, bad breath, loss of appetite, dizziness, double vision, decreased heart rate, and shortness of breath. Losing awareness of ones surroundings, Loss of self control, violent behavior, unconsciousness, heart failure, coma, and sometimes death. Weight loss will occur, salt imbalance, and muscle fatigue after long-term use. Long-term side effects are damage to the nervous system, lungs, kidneys, bone marrow, the fetus of a pregnant women, the body’s immune system, and lack of oxygen in the body will happen to a person using inhalants.

Mental Effects:

Confusion, mood swings, delusions, hallucinations, and overall effect of a persons judgment will be altered.

 

Marijuana

 

Cannabis-

·         Marijuana is the common name for the drug made from the Cannabis sativa plant.

 

 

Side effects-

·         Marijuana causes you to lose focus on the events around them.

·         A region of the brain that affects short term-memory is the hippocampus this area of the brain has a lot of THC receptors causing loss of short-term memory.

 

 

Narcotics

Narcotics are made from opium like drugs.   People abuse them when they are prescribed or not prescribed to themselves. A person will take a narcotic to get a feeling of being able to escape, or relive pain.

Common Drugs in this Classification are:

Opium, Paregoric (made from opium extract)

Heroin (“horse,” “H,” “junk,” “smack,” “dope,” “hard stuff ,“ “brown,” “D”)

Codeine (“school boy”

Morphine (“M,” “hocus,” “white stuff”)

Methadone (“dollies,” “dolls”)

Some synthetic Opiods : Amidone, Meperidine, Demerol, Oxycontin

Forms: Powder, pills, tablets, liquid, soft, tarry, and solid. They can be swallowed, smoked, injected, of sniffed.

Medical Use: They can be used as pain killers, and cough suppressants.

Physical Effects:

A physical dependency is brought upon a person when they use narcotics. Damage to the body and brain can take place. Any women who are pregnant will cause severe health problems for her baby if using narcotics. Breathing problems, nausea, and loss of appetite, dry mouth, dizziness, and having no coordination or just some side effects of narcotics. Death can occur when an overdose takes place, or an infection from the result of sharing needles.

Mental Effects:

Narcotics produce a feeling of euphoria and a sudden “rush”. Someone who uses narcotics will become carless and unaware of their surroundings. The brain will tell a person’s body that they need the drug when the feeling wears off. Aggression may occur when not on the drug, and they are psychologically addicting.
