Form #16, 2009 graphite, 8"x 5" __ Ever since I was a child I drew forms using cross-hatching, across page after page. I always found this to be much more interesting than simply doodling I also felt that it would make me a better draftsman. Cross-hatching became a natural and almost organic process. When I recently came across a paper that was produced expressly for pen and ink, I realized that I could take this from a simple throw-away exercise to a process by which I could create more finished pieces. These pieces were created with varying amounts of illusionary depth while staying close to the picture plane. In a way they are like two dimensional relief sculptures Although they are not intended to be anything in particular other than form they each have a decided influence. Some are reminiscent of drapery others appear more organic and take on a more muscular appearance. Still others are disturbingly similar to ligament and bone. The future of this series will evolve much like the individual works, organically. __
